Disabling airbags?? Help

Featured Replies

There is no internal way of disabling the airbag in the front passenger side of my octy, but, would it be possible to have this done by a dealer through the VAGCOM.

I am enquiring i may need to put a baby seat in the car some time in the future.

I think dealers tend to charge something like 50 pounds to do this, and will probably give themselves a disclaimer by saying "we can't promise that it won't go off anyway".

Why do you have to put a baby in the front instead of the back?

It is advisable to have this done at the dealer and you also have to inform your insurance company. The dealer will ask you to sign a form (or two) as well.

Thanks for the replies. Not much point in getting it done if they put a disclaimer to say that it still might go off.

If that's the case i could go into business imobilising airbags.

And with your new business I imagine you'd have to get them to sign exactly the same type of disclaimer... would you be covered if they still went off?

Still curious why baby has to go in the front?

I have the same issue as the OP. When my wife is travelling alone with the child, she'll prefer to have the child a glance away rather than over her shoulder.

There's two schools of thought about whether the front or back is the safer place in an impact. I'm inclined to think that the front is (in a rear facing seat).

Bummer about this being a dealer thing. Can the detonating charge be removed altogether? Alfa/Fiat have a key on the side of the dash to disable the passenger side for this very reason. I think the MkII Octy does too.

My pug 306 had a key as well. I believe it is an "optional extra" to have the key switch fitted - for about

We've always put baby (now toddler) in the back, and yes, it's frustrating when they are still in a rear-facing seat, but as soon as they are in a forward-facing one, life gets easier, and in most cars, you can still reach them to give them their cup back, etc.

I think it might even be safer to have a kid in the back where you *can't* reach them, so that you are less tempted to give attention to a child in the front seat, who is more accessible; you are meant to be driving after all...

The key de-activation was an option but I've had mine done through my dealer as I have a 7 month old and a dog to transport at the same time every other weekend.

Guys,

I have an Octy mk II vRS (2006) but am away on business at the moment. I need to know if mine will have a feature to disable the passenger airbag with a key as I am picking up my new 37" TV before I have to get my toddler from nursery (forward facing seat).

Cheers,

Dan

Standard on the Octy II vRS.
