Haldex drives

Featured Replies

As my car is approaching 5 yrs old in Dec/Jan, I'm confused about my lack of definitive information

Gen IV Haldex drives don't appear to need a filter, but filters are available. Also, the oil change schedule seems to vary with marque.

Now either they need a filter replacement filter and an oil change, or they don't, or perhaps just an oil change at some sort of interval.

Is there a published generic service schedule published anywhere, or do mfrs make it up as they go along?

Sorry, perhaps I should have been clearer. I had read all that thanks.

What I meant was that other makes of car using a Haldex drive have different service regimes, and basically the Haldex drive is pretty much the same, possibly only software tweaks and bolt holes etc!

It is a busy little thing, and puts up with a lot of clutch slippage within a very small package.

Has anyone here bought a filter yet, I'm looking at a Volvo one which looks suitable.

.... I had read all that thanks....

No problem :hi:

I asked my service dealer about haldex service intervals.

Answer was not more than 40k but sooner for ardous condition useage,Filter it all depends on your vehicle age and which generation, just leave it to experts as i think a special tool  :giggle: is required.

I also asked what will happen if the oil is never changed he replied "the oil will change into cheese"   :mmm:   cheese.

Hope that helps. :hi:

Thanks, but no special tools required, Gen IV as already stated, and mine does get "arduous" use. My local "expert" Skoda dealer - I think I'm more expert when it comes to Haldex !!

Mmm, still no further

Seemingly little information so far, lots of stuff out there : http://www.kugaownersclub.co.uk/forum/generation-4-iv-haldex-oil-and-filter-service_topic12284.html

I'll get a Volvo filter and see what the Skoda one looks like. Sounds like it could be useful to take the pump out and have a look as well.

Lots of webby stuff indicate more frequent servicing than Skoda suggest, my Yeti gets a lot of quick gravel track driving most weeks, so I reckon it might be worth a gamble in buying a filter.

Looking at some of the photos and service guides on that Kuga site....I think they may have differently shaped housings to ours, need to get under and have a look again, but not how I remember it.

Yes, probably the outer casting is specific to each marque: JLR, VAG, Volvo etc, but the core is essentially the same.

Looks like a punt could be worthwhile as there seems to be no rush of information here. (why has my script gone grey with no icons?)

Why has my hair gone grey with no highlights?

^  That's living in Nth Wales for you!!!   ; - D))

The Kuga peeps seems to talk about the filter being on the top, and removing the ECU to aid access. On ours I think the filter is high up on the RHS, seem to remember it looking a bit awkward to access (either the exhaust or propshaft might be in the way).

Looks like pump removal to clean the gauze would be a Very Good Idea, looks really easy on the Kuga, hopefully is on ours too.

Just been down to my local Ford/MG/Volvo dealer and ordered a Volvo Haldex filter. In stock in Bristol and will be in Cardiff tomorrow morning - £33.12.

Might be a while before I get underneath as my MG is in tonight for a partial re-paint, my Suzuki needs a gearbox tailshaft bearng to be replaced and reamed to size first. Next Friday I'm off for a week overseas, so it'll have to wait a while.

Reamed to size... Love it!

Yup, just found my set of expanding reamers last used in 1989 in building a Mini for my son to go to uni in :nerd:

maybe the filter/seal/fittings comes in a kit, with the oil.

Err, no - if it did there might be rush to get it :dull:

Picked the kit up, very "twee" little filter marked Haldex, ali cap, two screws, and a plastic sealing disc with fitted "O" ring. Quiet why you need a new ali cap and screws seems strange.

Just need time now to explore - more pressing things to do now :wall:

Maybe they're made of cheese and you're likely to mangle the old ones taking them off....I'll let you have a go first :)

Maybe it's a critical 'single use' part which ensures a perfect seal.......not that uncommon

Err no - again

The seal is the plastic disc with fitted "O" ring with the filter element underneath. The aluminium cap just holds all the bits in the main body from popping out!

Back under the SJ now, pressure washing the underneath before I can take the rear end of the gearbox casing off to fit my new bush just in from the States :swear:

In that case maybe the service divisions are in the habit of losing bits.
