Up date.

The final invoice has been prepared by the menders.

It came to just short of 4 grand.

Electrics 2498 ( assume that's the sat nav)

Parts 242

Labour 350

Paint 233 ( didn't know there was any need for paint)

Sundries 422 ( courtesy car?)

Quite cheap really. Might have been easier to give the tea leaf the two hundred he or she probably got for it on eBay, and cut out the middleman.

Btw if I traded the car I'd get 7-8 K

That's nuts...I'd say they are adding stuff on to up the price too.

Paint...where

Labour....nowhere near that much

Parts...what was damaged?

There was damage to thin vertical trim of the door frame where the jemmy went in and the rubber seal which sits on the glass..

The repairer was on their approved list so didn't have to quote.

Can't help feeling the insurers ( and ultimately us) were ripped off.

As it is such an easy thing to nick would it not be possible at the design stage to incorporate a four figure Pin, number without which, it would not operate.

The columbus is 'protected' by a four digit radio code...

However, it's entirely possible to extract the pin number or calculate it from the device serial number rendering it useless :)

There is a PIN number.....

Unfortunately the PIN number system has been cracked a long time ago, and so they can be very easily obtained.

Brilliant!

When do you need the code?

  • Author

You'd think there would be a facility to change the code yourself.

To simple I suppose.

When do you need the code?

When first installed into a new vehicle. It should pair with the car so it won't need reentering when the battery is removed.

If it's taken out and put in another vehicle, you'll need the code again.

To simple I suppose.

That would just result in people forgetting the code they set. It would still need a 'master' code to unlock it in this circumstance :)

Ah... I hadn't thought of that

don't they stick it in the freezer so it loses it's code or is that an urban myth  ?

Urban myth, at least on the Columbus units.

I would expect any serious outfit would have the ability to generate codes from serial numbers as many eBay sellers are able to.

Otherwise look for 'RNS 510 Manager (MRM)' on youtube as that shows a program that basically checks every pin until one works :)

The insurance company said they would send me a copy of the invoice from the menders.

A letter arrived from them on Saturday saying the invoice was enclosed.

However.............There was nothing else in the envelope

What did you expect from an insurance company? Competence?
