Greenline 2 pulling power...

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Nice to meet you all!

I'm looking at buying a skoda superb elegance estate mk2 and am wondering if the 1.6 cr greenline has the oomf to lug around the pa and drum kit I will carry in the boot and small trailer. I'm a little worried that it might be asking a but much of the smallish engine over the long term.

Anyone have any experience of this engine as a load lugger?

On a side note, anything I should be aware of when buying a 5 year old example with about 60k on the clock?

Any replies massively appreciated!

I've had my Greenline Elegance 1.6 TDI estate since new, a 2013 FL model, now with 85k on the clock. I drive it all over the country with my work gear in the back so a fair bit of weight to carry around. Obviously it's not as powerful as a 2.0 TDI, but you get used to driving it and how to get the best out of it. My seven previous vehicles were either 1.9 TDI 130bhp or 2.0TDI 140bhp.

It has adequate power for normal everyday driving plus good economy when driven carefully, although it will never win any traffic light races. I spend most of my time on the motorway and average a true 60mpg. Note: as mine is the FL model it has a 6 speed gearbox, earlier versions had a 5 speed gearbox.

The obvious things to check are service history, number of owners, overall condition etc. At 5 years old and 60k it sounds like it's had an easy life, but then again it could have been a taxi covering 60k miles all town stop/start in which case it may have had a harder life. Check it out very carefully.

If you aren't sure go and drive one, have a good long drive on all sorts of roads and see what you think.

I think cnc has it well covered above.

I've had my car (a 1.6d Elegance Estate) well loaded for some long trips and I've no complaints. A bit more gear work on my 6 speed than a 2.0 but that has been offset by the pleasure of the mpg, low road tax and low insurance (a pleasure as i get to charge mileage and this car keeps far more of it in my pocket than the other options).

I have not used my car for towing so I wont offer an opinion beyond the fact that I know of plenty 1.6 hatches and estates that are used for small to medium caravans as well as the same for trailers. It sounds like you will be hauling bulk as opposed to weight so that shouldn't be an issue?

Perhaps a Greenline owner will chime in on the ride height when carrying weight or towing a trailer - I have heard the Greenlines have a tendency to bottom out at high loads due to their lower ride height compared to a standard set up.

Hi Both,

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! Really useful to have an inside perspective; I've read all the reviews but nothing beats people who actually live with the car day in day out.

I'm looking at purchasing this one - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201607015444594?search-target=usedcars&make=skoda&model=superb&price-to=10000&postcode=cb43hd&keywords=elegance&radius=1500&searchcontext=default&sort=mileage&page=1&body-type=estate&onesearchad=new%2Cnearlynew%2Cused&logcode=p&adPos=1

Bit of a weird one, all the cars I've seen so far haven't had that wood trim effect... looks like a possible optional extra to me or is this a different spec or something? Any thoughts on the mileage/price/general deal appreciated as always.

Thanks again,

Jamie

Looks like fully loaded ;) only the engine is wrong ;) but if you chip/re-map it - then it should be OK :)

I'll let others tell you if the price is good (I'm in Ireland - so all UK prices looks damned good to me) but it appears to be a nice, clean car with a very good specification and an attractive mileage. If the claim of an FSH checks out then all the better!

In Ireland, the wood trim you see would be expected on an high spec (Elegance) car. again, UK members will know what is correct for your market...maybe see what they say about the lack of badges on the back (might have been removed, might be normal - might indicate an accident).

Hi there,

Thank you for responding!

I didn't even notice the lack of badges on the back, very good spot, thank you for that, will bring it up with the dealer. The car has had 3 services, it was on the "as and when" servicing schedule (I'll be changing it back to the 10k regime). I have an independent mechanic doing a pre sale check tomorrow so hopefully will get the "Greenlight" :-)

Interesting on the wood trim thing, could that then indicate it's an import maybe? I haven't seen it on any of the other Greenline elegance spec estates I've looked at!

That does look a nice clean example, and if you check here https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history the low mileage does seem to be about right over the years. The wood trim was an optional extra, personally I really like it but don't have it on mine, if I remember correctly it was about £140. It should also have xenon headlights being an Elegance model which the advert doesn't mention, but ask anyway.

Check the climate control works properly and blows nice cold air, also try the electric seats and memory function works ok, it will have automatic headlights and windscreen wipers. The advert does mention it has park assist but it doesn't - if it did it would have front parking sensors as well as rear, and there would be an extra button beside the gear lever to activate this. The rear badges missing could be someone who likes the debadged look, or maybe a replacement tailgate as has already been mentioned, but either way it wouldn't bother me.

Going by the pictures it does look to have been really well looked after both inside and out - go take a look and have a drive.

Just remembered- at 5 years old it may be due a replacement cambelt, maybe someone else has a definitive answer here. See if it's been done.

It's not unusual to have a replacement water pump put on at the same time as a new cambelt but it won't get the water pump unless you ask for it to be replaced.

You do realise the tax is the same for the 2.0 and 1.6

You do realise the tax is the same for the 2.0 and 1.6

Is it?.

2011 2.0 TDI 140 = 143 g/km = £145

2011 2.0 TDI 170 = 149 g/km = £145

2011 1.6 Greenline = 114 g/km = £30

All manual gearbox for 2011 model year, or have I got it wrong somewhere.

Hi,

Thank you for the excellent info!! Really glad to have the wood trim thing cleared up, was puzzling me  :notme: Also the link to the MOT checker, excellent resource! Amusing that it says "Emissions too clean to give readings on test"!

RE the cam belt, thank you for the heads up on the waterpump. The dealer is going to change the belt as part of the sale, will make sure the water pump and tensioners are included! Also for the climate control and park assist, maybe I can use the park assist to knock some off the asking price! Another great spot,

You Briskoda people really know your stuff

No, its me that's got it wrong. My 2015 face lift 2.0 140 is £30 and presumed the engine was the same across the board but a 2011 is a lot more expensive. Looks like they made some changed to the tax banding maybe?

Either way, I got 2.0 performance for 1.6 tax  :D

That's correct for the Greenline as far as the advert is concerned...

Oh I forgot to add, the only thing I personally don't like about the greenline is that it sits lower than standard. I'm sure its not an issue day to day but loaded up and with a trailer on and find yourself going over a large speed bump you can end up scraping a bit.

Insurance on the 1.6 is another reason to be allowed a new toy.... WesBrooks recently posted this:

Insurance groups (2008-2015):

1.6 TDI Elegance Greenline 3: 16

2.0 170 TDI CR Elegance L&K 24

2.0 170 TDI CR Elegance 4x4 25

2.0 170 TDI CR Elegance 26

I think someone said the 2 litre 140 TDI CR was Group 22 - but I could be wrong.

The engines got some attention for the facelift to reduce CO2 emissions on all models which would have dropped them down a few tax bands.

To somebody of a reasonable age though, double the insurance group could be an extra £20. I don't find insurance groups that relevant as its more all the other things and statistics based on you and where you live that can have more of an affect on your premium. My dad has a few cars insured of vastly different values and insurance groups yet pays a very similar price on each policy, one of the perks of being old I suppose. Me on the other hand, at 27, there would probably be more difference between insurance groups but it would never stop me from buying the car I wanted

Hi all,

Just wanted to say that I paid the deposit this afternoon and am off to pick her up on Sunday. Thanks to all for the advice and chipping in, made the decision a lot easier.

I've just bought some window tints to celebrate

Happy new car! hope she serves you well.

Aye , we all know about that little wheeze ;-)

Pretty much all the diesels shipped in Mark II Superbs are running the cheat software, so the main thing that's dropped tax bands is the addition of a stop/start system. Motor tax is on CO2 rather than NOx emission, which is what the engines were cheating on anyway. The Irish motor tax on a 2011 CR170 diesel Superb is the same as for a 2015 model 280 TSI Leon Cupra thanks in no small part to the stop/start system...
