I'm having no luck

Recommended Posts

I have only had my 51 Reg 4x4 turbo for a few week after my golf was written off,

I went out this morning and was driving along when the oil light started flashing (red) and the engine started tapping badly, (turbo sounded louder than normal)

I know for a fact the oil level was fine because I actually checked it this morning before I started the car,

I stopped the car as soon as I could and it is now parked up until I get time to look at it,

Is it likely that the engine is knackered now that it started knocking like that or are they normally fine once the issues are fixed?

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated thanks

I take it this is a 1.8T?

If the oil level was fine then its likely that it was an oil pressure problem due to a blocked pickup pipe. Quite common on some high mileage cars that have built up some sludge for a number of reasons.

Whether you have killed it or not depends on how quick you turned it off after you got the light on. Due to the fact that you could hear the engine tapping and the turbo being noisy means you probably didn't cut the engine as soon as you saw the light so its possible you have done some damage.

You need to investigate the route cause and fire her up and see what she sounds like

Yes it's the 18t mate,

Unfortunately I was stuck on a bloody motorway when it all happened so I couldn't act as quickly as I would of liked to,

Obviously I will keep my fingers crossed for the best but start looking for an engine lol

Blocked oil strainer for sure. Engine & Turbo maybe ok, as they often survive if they haven't been thrashed when the light came on. If it aint blowing blue smoke out the back you've probably got away with it.

Change the oil strainer pipe & use the correct VAG sealant for the sump. Give it some fresh Quantum oil & VAG filter too, & cross your fingers. It's an easy job on the tranverse 1.8T's.

I would order a new strainer and some sump sealant from the dealer or wherever first, have a gander in the sump and see what you find.

If it has blocked the strainer, fit the new one and fire her up, you can't lose anything by trying.

Its not transverse like in the passat tough is it?

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. If it does need and engine, I do have one from a 1.8t 4x4 with full service history no smoke and can show video of it running. Hopefully it will be sorted with the oil pickup and fresh oil and filter?

Thanks mate,

How much are you wanting for the engine (incase I need it)

After a bit of research today and the advice from everyone here The first thing I'm going to try is

Replacing the

Pickup in the sump (including o ring)

Clean the sump out

New oil and filter

And see how it goes

But I just have a couple of questions

With it being the 4x4 is it difficult to get the sump off? (Anything else have to be removed to be able to do this?)

I have heard some of the sump bolts are a bit hard to get into, is there any hints or tools that can help with this?

And finally is there anything else I should or shouldn't be doing at the same time to give me the best chance of saving my engine?

Sorry for all the silly questions

Being a 4x4 shouldn't make it any harder. Two of the sump bolts are a complete nightmare though, the ones right next to by the flywheel.

I ended up keeping them out and just destroying that area with sealer, but I wouldn't recommend that..

Yeah it wasn't my smartest move but I got ****ed off. You'll need an Alan key with form of swivel on it though, as you can only get onto them bolts at an angle.

hahaha yeah I bet,

I'm sure I will sort it mate thanks

I just wanted to make sure there wasn't loads of extra stuff needed removing before I could get it off

and you need to be careful not to drop them into the gearbox bell housing

Well after a lot of thought and talking to various people I am probably just going to cut my losses with the 4x4

It has just really ****** me off in such a short space of time lol

I'm not sure what to do with it yet,

Lots of people are saying break it because the 4x4 setup can be used on other cars (don't know if that's true or not) but to be honest I can't be bothered with the hassle of breaking it and being left with half a car, so it will probably be sold for spares or repairs

Thanks for all the help and advice

Shouldn't be a nightmare if you use the cut outs to access the bolts.

Rotate the engine around until one comes into view and you have a clear path.
