vcds readers

Featured Replies

Hi

I hope this is in the correct category.

Seriously considering getting a VCDS reader for my 65 plate, to tinker around with the extensive list of items that can be enabled.

I have absolutely no idea where to look or what reader to go for, any suggestions?

Had a vague look around eBay but in all honesty I'm flummoxed as to which will be the best/easiest to use  :|

TIA

There's only one VCDS. What's the confusion? There's an option of different hardware, such as Hex can or Hex net, but that's about it really. Cost is about £260 upwards, hardware dependant.

Ha. That just shows you my knowledge of this subject. What's the difference hardware wise?

Hex Net is the newer hardware which has more compatibility with the newest (2016 - 2017 model) cars etc. Hex Can covers everything from mid 90's up to now, but is still probably the one for you I reckon. You can buy from any of the resellers listed here.

Anyone selling elsewhere is selling stolen hookey copies.

HEX-NET can be either Wi-Fi connected to any device with a web browser or USB connected to a Windows PC running VCDS.

HEX-CAN can only USB connected to a Windows PC running VCDS.

I have both, but of preference use the HEX-NET via USB as it's faster and (according to the developers Ross-Tech) is more likely to be able to fully support MQB2 vehicles than HEX-CAN or older cables.

I'm shortly going to install Boot Camp on my Macbook Air so that I can dual boot into Windows specifically to run VCDS (which is only supported on Windows).

You might also want to check this thread, there's a discussion about a cheaper alternative to the original VCDS which works just as well

So long as you have an Android phone or device, see https://obdeleven.com

OBDeleven application works with all phones and tablets with Android version 4.1 and later.
