What would win?

Featured Replies

I know its a very pointless argument really, but what do you reckon would win between a remapped Octy vRS and a standard BMW 535 diesel?

Should be pretty close? Or would the 413 lb ft of the diesel clinch it?

my money would be on the BMW if its a new model, 3.0 twin turbo 6 speed diesel Vs 1.8T 5 speed, in a straight line the BMW looks likely to win

Thing is, its got a 155 mph top speed. 0-60 in about 6.2 seconds there abouts. A remapped Octy could surely get pretty close no?

close but not beat it i'd say

BM would destroy remapped octy...

you saw how close the D vs v8 was on topgear... not sure which v8 they used tho, the 4l or the 4.7

I reckon it would be very close but as much as i hate to say it,i think the bmw would win, traction would definately help it from the start and then i'd say they would be fairly equal with the bmw just edging it by a car length or so

Interesting question:-

Depends on who mapped the octy and if it had any other mods.

Well remapped Octys would have a higher top end. They would in theory be slower to 60 however if it was on 225/45 p zero c rather than std dunlops my money would be with the Octy.

By the same token is this a 535d std or a sport with the wider tyres?

the 535d is only available in m-sport trim... with 245/40 tyres

i saw a none sport one yesterday but it was on german plates... checked their site .. the std car does come on 225 17's but in the uk we only get sports....

i wouldn't say destroy as the BMW has a 6.0 0-60 so not massivle quicker than a remapped octavia but still quicker and probably quicker on the move.

bloody diesel brigade.

bloody diesel brigade.

By my criteria, the Octavia wins every time!

A second hand

thats all well and good Mr.Bodge but the question was regarding performance rather than value for money :)

Bmw i would say too. I wonder what it would top out at deristricted.

there was a slightly modified 535D at knockhill and it seemed pretty faster against *cough* matchmakers*cough* octavia although it couldnt get past a 279bhp leon :)

BMW would wipe the floor with an Octy!...once the traction control gets it off the line!;) ...de-restricted they say it can do 180mph!:)

Chris

the figures of the BMW aren't massivly better than the octavia so i very much dount it would be a case of anything wiping the floor with anything else.

makes my laugh though tht you need an extra 1.2 litres and an extra turbo to be faster. diesel my a$$

That's one quick BMW (three posts above) Wasn't doing so well on track until the straights though. :D

They used a 545 for the test. That's now been superceded by the 550. In realworld terms, that has a 4.8 litre V8.

I think the Power-to-Weight ratio has to be taken into account also. Leaving the diesel's torque to one side, the Beemer has 272bhp and weighs 1,660kg. By my reckoning that gives it a figure of 164bhp per tonne. Now I don't now, when you mention a 'remapped' Octy, what exact power output you had in mind. I think also calculating the Octy's P-T-W would help work out which would win.

Oh, and for the record, the 535d comes in both SE and M-Sport guises.

Steve

Regarding this, the SE spec runs a 225/50 17" rim, with the M-Sport version using a 245/40 on an 18".

Drag would also be taken into account I suppose - according to BMW, both specs of the 535d have a coefficient of 0.28. What's the Octy's figure?

Steve

There are four factors in essence

power to weight

torque to weight

drag

grip

lets use my old octy

approx 250bhp per ton

approx 260lb ft per ton

0.28 std drag (i did have the wrc wing though....)

grip 245/35 p zero C

BMW

164bhp per ton

torque alot per ton

drag 0.28

grip 245s prob pilot sport etc

doesnt take a brain surgeon to see the bmw would be ahead to 30,, level at 60 and behind come 100. It would hit its limiter @ 155 The Octy would not.

To 60 it might be close, to 100 the BM would win and above 100 the Octy would go backwards.

And I really hate BMWs :thumbdwn:
