Combi removable boot light - torch doesn't work

Featured Replies

I've had my Superb a few weeks now, and I noticed that the removable torch/flashlight in the boot doesn't work. It lights up when attached, as the boot light, but when detached, the LEDs on the front do not turn on when you press the button. I wondered at the beginning whether the batteries just needed a little more driving time to be charged up, but it's been a few weeks now.

Has anybody else had the same problem?

Could have been dead from day 1 or its not getting power from the pins. take it back if its under warranty

I presume they get power all the time once the ignition is on so I bet after a few years of the batteries never getting cycled and constantly getting over charged they won't last long anyway.

The torches in my mk2 lasted from 2010-2013 without issue so I'd wager that they'll at least outlive the warranty (typical). OP mention it to your dealer next time you're in.

To be honest i find the torch pretty poor anyway, you can get a better LED torch from poundland and keep it in the glove box.

Lithium-ion batteries are not supposed to be cycled for best battery life. Surely they use that kind?

lithium ion batteries are not supposed to be held at maximum charge all the time either.

Anything over 30 degrees is classed as elevated temp for a lithium cell when fully charged which also doesn't help in the summer

I had the same problem, torch on a new car working as the boot light but not as a torch, but have resolved it fairly easily.  Push a blunt tool like a coffee stirrer into the notch by the torch LEDs to unclip the case.  There are three AAA size 500mAH NiMH cells inside.  All three measured close to 0V so the charging circuit in the torch wouldn't charge them, another charger (Nitecore brand) did though and now my torch works as it should.

The torch in my boot comes on when in situ but not when removed. Upon opening it up I find in the top part of the casing there is a metal strip left of centre. There is a space alongside it which looks like it should have a strip there also. Probably to connect the batteries in series or parallel or something like that. Should there be two of these strips. Looks like there should be

The metal strip looks like a magnet - certainly acts ;line one - to hold the torch in place in the holder.

Ive opened and repaired about 30 of these, there is only one magnet.

Chances are the batteries are dead and need replacing, id be checking the voltage with a multimeter as if the cells are toast, it wont charge.
