Colombus queries: SDXC cards and MIB 1/2?

Featured Replies

I didn't have much luck with the search, so apologise if this has been asked before...

I'm soon getting a 16-reg Greenline III Estate with Columbus and Canton system - can't wait! :D

I'm hoping that I can use SDXC (i.e. >32GB) cards in it for audio files?  Ideally a 128GB card or two, as they seem to be the current sweet spot of capacity vs price for large capacity cards. Is the Columbus picky about brands/models of card, or can I use any decent/fast card?

Also, the car I'm getting was registered in March 2016.  Does that mean it'll have MIB or MIB2?  And what's the difference anyway..?  (If there's a post/faq with MIB vs MIB2 features, I'd appreciate a link to it please.)

Ta muchly for any tips! :)

I quite sure people have used 128GB cards with succes. Im usin a 32GB without any problems.

And yours should have a MIB2. Biggest difference AFAIK is support for CarPlay and Android Auto.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure 32GB will always work, as only pre-historic SD-capable devices don't support SDHC (i.e. >2GB <=32GB) cards. ;)

But given that I've been reading about FLAC/lossless support on the Columbus, and the need to supply the Canton system with very high quality audio files to hear it at its best, I'm going to struggle to fit much music on my card(s) unless I can use huge ones...

Im quite the big ones will be just fine. I seem to recall the manual states support sdxc-cards.

I'm pretty sure as Gromle said you can use 128Gb cards (I use 2x 32Gb cards)

you can also use a portable hard drive plugged into the USB port for music if you are really stuck.

Before you spend hours ripping/converting all your music to FLAC I would wait to get the car.

The Skoda audio system is not the best in terms of audio equipment, plus the sound proofing of the car is quite limit so you have a lot of background noise from Wind , road & tyres.

You may find that normal mp3s are sufficient for you.

Might save you a few hours & a couple of quid.

The other thing with large cards/music collections is that with so many tracks it is quick cumbersome with the Columbus touch screen to search through a lot of files for the album or artist you want.

Hence I chose to have 2 smaller cards so I can swap out a few albums, add a few new ones each week or so.

Thanks for the tips chaps.

I already have a 32GB SD card with most of my favourite music on (between 128-192kbps mostly, with a few more recent rips at 320kbps)... I use it in my Leon, so I'll try that first, I think.  (I use the USB slot in the Leon for spoken word and comedy, so I can shuffle music without getting random spoken word stuff turning up.)

I think in theory I'll be able to use CarPlay with my iPhone and the Columbus, so I can try that too...

It's all very exciting!  Looking forward to getting the car next week. :)

Don't forget the Columbus also rips cds directly to the internal hdd (jukebox) :-). No idea what bitrate but sounds good to me !

SD card <= 4GB, but 4GB SD cards (not SDHC) are quite hard to find.

SDHC cards are between 4GB and 32GB.

SDXC cards are >= 64GB (with a theoretical maximum of 2TB).

Ta for the correction PetrolDave, and thanks for the tip Leeboy - hadn't even considered that the car might do ripping itself. The control freak in me would want to do it myself anyway mostly, but it'll be good for emergencies! ;)
