EPC light on, brake lights and reverser light not working.

Featured Replies

Today, EPC  light came on. Both brake lights and the reversing light are not working. Indicator lights/signals are working. Car: Skoda Fabia 2004.

Replace the brake switch, and check the reverse bulb before replacing the reversing switch, the failed brake switch is putting the EPC light on.

Thanks,

It is my husband's car. Possible that the reverse bulb went out a little while ago and he didn't notice, and that the brake switch went out today maybe. Do you know where you can get a brake switch and what type is needed for a 2004 fabia? Unfortunately, Mills auto is not open on a Sunday or I would go there.

I was wondering if it could be the fuse, but if that was the case wouldn't the indicator lights not be working?

Thanks for any help.

Get the switch from Skoda, not worth fitting a pattern part, they should have one on the shelf since they fail so often.

Edit: Fuse won't put the EPC light on, might affect the reverse light though, worth checking.

Right, I am going to remove the brake switch and hopefully tomorrow I will find somewhere that stocks one.

Hi,

Thanks, very helpful. Do you buy the switch online from Skoda?

Looks like i will have to focus mostly on replacing the brake light switch and the reverse bulb. If reversing light does not come on, then I will look at the fuse. Wish I had noticed the problem first thing this morning instead of at 4pm.

The advice you were given was given because VW group have had a few attempts to get a brake switch that is easy to fit and stays working. So, get a switch from any Skoda/VW/SEAT dealer as they are all the same for a Fabia/Polo/Ibiza of that age.

Edit:- have a look on the guides section on this forum, I'm sure that there is a step by step guide of how to replace that switch, main dealers will only ever stock the latest version which is ????????????.

Look at page 2 of the Fabia Technical Guides.

6Q0945511, item 1 here. There are a couple of dealerships selling them online via ebay, look up via that number. Alternatively, email [email protected] asking for that part number and get one sent to your door. Approx £12 for a genuine item.

As said though, if you wait 'til Monday, and pass any VAG group dealership, you may well be able to pick one up off the shelf.

Just for clarity, if you do buy that part number, genuine, there's no need to press the brake pedal at all during fitting.

Can't remember if there's a dedicated fuse for the reverse light(s), I'll have a look.

Presumably the high-level brake light isn't working either?

Hi,

Yes I saw the brake switch light guide. But it seems to be for a later model. When my husband and I tried the first step it did not work.

Just tried pressing down on brake again, the lights came on and off and then wouldn't go on again. So I guess the bulbs are ok and it must be the switch.

Hi there, thanks for the reply. That one isn't working either.

100% the brake light switch then.

Brilliant, thanks for your help. Fortunately, my husband and I are on holiday next week for four days and can use my Nissan Primera. If I cannot find a brake light switch tomorrow, I will order one. As long as I have it by next weekend, it will be okay.

It looks like you're sorted, but anyway kudos for being prepared to have a go at mechanics yourself.
