Folding Secretly eating my disk space :D

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has come up before but I can't find it.

Mine is a pretty fast PC, but it's "only" got a 60GB hard drive. I always try to keep it down so I rarely if ever install anything, I don't use games and I always delete documents and other downloads once I've read or used them!

Last time I checked, admittedly it was months ago, I had used about 30GB of space, today I get a "You are critically low on disk space" threatening message from B. Gates Esq.

Not sure what to do about it, I ran the defragmentor thingy and it said I had a 25GB text file ( foldinghistory.txt or something) in the folding folder!! I couldn't believe it, deleted it and instantly had all my disk space back and a faster running computer

I had no idea that it did this, so question is does it just do it to me, or do people reguarly delete it or something. Also will it still work now that I simply deleted the whole file in a rage that it had dared use up all my space without asking! I've been folding for I guess about a year solid and never noticed it before :D

Finally, a more general question. Is there an easy way to find out where all your space is, i.e. what your biggest files are so that you can see if you want them or not?

Cheers,

Dr Pepper

TWENTY FIVE GIGABYTES?!

I'm going to check my system tonight then. I know there's a couple of txt files in the folding folder, but didn't think any were that big.

I couldn't find a foldinghistory.txt, but all my log files in the folding directory are no more than a few kbytes! Will be interesting to see if it reappears on your system. Are you running graphical or console and which version? :D

Chris

Hmm interesting this one, and something i would have thought would have been in the Faq on stanfords page if it was to be the norm, as am sure a lot of us would not want this to happen over time... i better go check a few machines...mind you they will all have a new image on them soon, so i guess it wont matter LOL

Believe me I was well shocked! Unfortunately I was so busy being ****ed off at it for secretly eating my disk space that I forgot what it was actually called, I think it might have been F@Hhistory or something, can't remember. I do know it was far too big to open annyway, it said notepad couldn't open it. Then I just deleted it (Which took several minites!

It hasn't reappeared yet, maybe it only comes when you finish a WU. As for which console I'm using I've no idea, it just sits in the system tray with a red cog thing. It's never been quite right because (I've mentioned this before) when you click on it to see the stats like I used to it frequently crashes. So now I just ignore it and it gets on with it ok on it's own. Still pretty amazed it did this though

Have you got the directory it was in, please? Which version are you using? When using the graphical version I never consulted any "folding" folder on C: - but I do now I have it as a service. :)

Trying to picture what a 25gb notepad file would be like - That's 25,000,000kb! How long have you been folding too?

System tray icon would be the graphical client - When you double click on it, it brings up the program with all the molecular drawing going on (Its advised to right click on the icon and hit "configure" and change the "molecular draw" rate right down - uses left graphics and general power.

There's a sticky in this forum for how to set it up as a service which is marginally more efficient but slightly less user friendly if you're not very PC literate. I.e It tooks me quite a while to learn about it. ;)

Whats your folding I.D then?

When you double click on it, it brings up the program

When I double click on it it crashes! But it works fine if I leave it alone. :D

My name on the board is "Richard", but my score doesn't reflect how much I did because I spent most of the year on the fiatforum.com team (43318, as Dr_Pepper), which I set up after seeing it on here. Then I fell out with them in December and transferred back to you lot. I've done 73WU's for them and so far 27 for Briskoda.

It crashes? Sounds like something might be wrong? I know usually you x2 click on the cog/rose to bring it up, but it has no minimise button, and you have to x2 click on it again to minimise.

Have you tried the service setup one? I found it much easier in its general operation as there's no actual program installed - It just goes... nice.

No but to be honest while it works I'm happy to just leave it alone :D

Arggh It's done it again!! This time I've got the screenshot to show you. It's used up 22GB in 3 days!!! What to do....

7819.attach

Those files should exist, but there's no way they should get that big (especially after only a couple of days). Try running scandisk, to check that the file size isn't being misreported due to a fault on the disk, and then re-downloading the software. The fact that it crashes when double-clicked doesn't mean much, as it's notoriously sensitive software but your two signs together aren't good :D

Will give it a go tomorrow, cheers. It's quite funny though, it's like the program is literally trying to take over my PC at the rate of 10GB a day

Edit that's weird I don't have scandisk  Is it called something else in windows XP, or is my PC just ****ed?! :D
