The Danish 'always on headlights'

Featured Replies

Hello everyone.

Since my Octavia is Danish, it came with the headlights always on function in order to accommodate the law that requires all vehicles to have daytime running lights. For those of you who never been here, all new cars are obligated to have DRLs, otherwise they need to be configured so that the headlights will always be on even if they are set to off. The only way you can actually turn off the headlights with the key in the ignition is to set the switch to the sidelights position.

Therefore, even if the switch is on the O position, the headlights are turned on just as if it would be on the low beam position. (dash symbol is also on) Except, the fact that the rest of the dash is not lit.

Anyhow.... I would like to get some advice as to how to figure out the way they did this do the car. I would like to either remove this feature in order to install actual daytime running lights or to change to having the fog lights on instead. No point into burning those xenons all day long during daytime. (yes it is legal to do this - just don't know how).

So... could this be done via the computer or through actual wiring? I would appreciate getting some tips on how to reverse-engineer this instead of working around it.

Probably possible to change it using VCDS.

An autoscan would be a great place to start :)

I have done this and saved the scan - a few errors here on small things, what exactly should I be looking for?

Not exactly sure what to look for yet, I was going to compare your car to mine (assuming it's a FL) to see if I could see anything obvious that might help.

Mine is not a facelift. It's a 2007 Octavia.

I thought the FL is standard fitted with DRL next to the fog lights?

Shall I post the result of the scan?

Sure, it's still useful, I have some pre-FL scans from other members cars I can compare to.

Some FL have DRL as standard but the lower spec (at least in the UK) don't :)

For a prefl your car will be programmed to Scandinavian running lights. There is an additional setting in VCDS that allows the fog lights to be used instead of head lights, you just need to look through the long coding helper for it. This is how I have mine set.

Carista let me turn on my headlights as DRLs.  It also let me turn on 'marker lights' but I didn't like it so turned them off again.

Do you guys have any reference to this coding helper?

Nice. Thank you! I will try this out when I get my hands on a vcds cable again. So if I choose the drl using fog lights, do I still get to have the rear lights on as well?

Will keep the thread until then.

Interesting to find out how they do it on older cars or non vag cars like my old Hyundai Getz as well.

On my 2 it's possible to have the lights on even though its switched off.

I can do it through the obd port on the car.

Yeah, it's what Mike said.

Mike, do you know if you can choose to have the rear lights on but the front sidelights off when you change to foglights as DRL?

Cheers!
