Activate Hill HOLDER

Featured Replies

I went to the only local location for a hill start earlier.

On the third attempt, due to other cars arriving, I managed to determine that:

upon release of the handbrake on a hill, the rear(?) brakes remain engaged for a short time (2 secs?) before releasing.

This was presumably set at the factory.

It's really not something to get too excited about, I have to say....

Wait a second..I thought that hill hold is when you relaese foot brake it holds for 2 seconds..so you don't have to use handbrake...am I right???

I came to a stop with the footbrake, then put on the handbrake for a short time before releasing it.

Maybe that's why the brakes only appeared to stay on for a short time? The brakes were holding from the time I released the footbrake? The car definitely held on the slope after releasing the handle.

I'll try again tomorrow. I have experienced it on my slightly sloping driveway from using the footbrake only.

I'm still not convinced that it is life-changing, though!

...and our other car doesn't have the feature..

Yes, the brakes stay on for a few seconds after releasing the FOOTBRAKE.  Sorry to shout.

Generally hill hold is to allow you to stop on an incline, hold it on the foot brake, then pull away without rolling back or using the hand brake.

So it keeps the brakes engaged for a short time to allow you to switch to the accelerator and get to the buying point.

Personally I don't think the feature is needed, if you can't use a hand brake you shouldn't be driving.  Plus, if you're stopped, incline or not, you should have your hand brake on, not be sitting on the brake, with the clutch dipped wearing out your release bearing and blinding the people behind with your brake lights.

However, that said, the Octavia hill hold does release the brake early-ish.

That is my view too.

A solution to a problem that does not exist.

I used my hill hold this week. Manoeuvring in a steep Lakeland car park. Not life changing, but was handy.
