Bought a belter......... however

Featured Replies

Right chaps I've been quite busy these few weeks so I'll start here. Sold my Seat Leon fr petrol last week. Stunning drive to be honest but my 40 + year old bones couldn't take the punishment. My son has bought my Vrs pd off me and got it cheap really cheap. So today fresh with the money from my Leon i bought a lovely race blue Octavia vrs tfsi. Stunning condition a big thanks to Kevin if you read this buddy. Bought by himself from new with every single bill/receipt all previous mots full service history i honestly have never seen a second hand car with so much history. Now on the drive home the car felt quite hesitant. Few flat spots stutters etc then picks up. Now the car has been ran on 95 octane fuel which may explain it feeling a bit flat but its holding back, hesitating very noticable. My first thought was coil packs but I'm also thinking diverter valve. It looks like the car is still on the original one as there is no receipt for one. No engine management light on. Help!!

Forgot to say it's an 07 tfsi.

Try it on 98 octain first it may surprise you.

I did put some 97 ron in to come home but it wasn't just a bit flat there was a noticeable flat spot/hesitation. It's the best way i can describe it. It goes well when it's going but poor acceleration.

Although I put the best fuel in every 3rd or 4th fill to give the engine a clean, I don't really notice any difference between standard 95ron and the best that Shell or BP offer. I can't imagine your problem is because of using standard fuel.

This seems similar to the problem I'm having with an 07 Tfsi vrs, does it sort of do a random lumpy judder when just toddling along ?

It could be the pcv valve, dv valve, spark plugs or coil packs. If it was me I would invest in changing the whole lot for peace of mind.

No I'm not convinced either. My Leon only ever ran on tesco 99 and even standard it would've ran rings round this Octavia today.  i just can't see fuel making that much difference. Looking at all the paperwork i can't see any receipt for a diverter valve. So if it's still on the original unit chances are it will be leaking. To rule one thing out I'll order one tomorrow and fit it at the weekend. Symptoms are a real lack of power through the rev range hardly pulls at all. I can't hear any hissing sounds and no engine check light. Does anyone have a P/N?

Plugs just been changed a few months back when serviced. Pcv is a good shout but it ticks over ok. Coil packs look like originals i think he never mentioned them and no receipt.

No lumpiness runs well just lacks power. A bit similar to limp but not quite if that makes sense.

If a coil pack goes you will notice a hard missfire when you put your foot down in the higher rpms

Well it did for me anyway and the missfire can be spotted early before it gets really bad

I have a bluefin map on mine so only around 245bhp but I wouldn't say it has any flat spots it pulls really well

Easiest thing to check would be pcv as it's literally on top of the engine

I changed my diverter valve by taking the drivers side wheel off and taking the wheel are lining off and you can just get to it

From what I understand the DV has either on or off boost (doesn't keep any between shifting) so if that's a bit knackered it may be why it's taking a bit of time for your car to come on boost

Also if it has a tear in the material I believe it can lose up to 4psi of boost in the higher rpms?

I'm convinced it's a knackered D/V. It's down on boost definately. So before i order today am i right with these P/N. The original part is 06F 145 710 G. But the updated part plastic piston type is 06H 145 710 D. I've phoned TPS this morning and the guy i spoke to said he wasn't sure if the revised part will work or fit and i couldn't return it once fitted.

Definately no misfire. I had several coilpacks fail on my mk 1 and like you mention it is a harsh misfire. Pcv will be looked at next after the D/V as for the cost of it it's worth changing anyway.

On the vRS TSI they are interchangeable, I wouldn't have thought any different for the TFSI,  but some people prefer the sealing of the revised diaphragm 710 G unit.

You could look at VCDS boost logging to confirm an issue before changing.

On the power, sounds like you have reasonable benchmark and expectation. I have to say when we first bought the vRS TSI 6 months ago I was a bit underwhelmed compared to the 170TSI twin charged golf we had.  The power delivery is quite different and in ordinary driving i just didn't feel anywhere near as urgent or quick.  I've got used to it now and I suppose when you really put your foot down it is as quick or slightly quicker. This is a standard Mk2 vRS TSI though....

Edit: see comment at bottom of product description here.

I've been lucky as I've had two different cars in the same week with the same engine. That little Leon was a quick car. So i was expecting at least the same from the Octavia but definately something not right. As for the D/V, so maybe i shouldve ordered the standard G type. The listing doesn't mention why they recommend the diaphragm type. I'm a bit confused now. D or G ?

Right I've ordered the G type. That's the correct part i believe.

You're looking at well over £250 there for things that may or may not fix the issue.  Mine has this annoying stuttering/kangarooing hesitation and my PCV, DV and plugs are all fine.

How much did you pay for the G? I've got one here, BNIB that I bought and discovered I didn't need.

I think it was a tenner!! LoL

No i won't know until i collect it and get the receipt. He did give me the price but i can't remember. He did say it was slightly cheaper than the D version.

Yeah i was thinking that. Don't want to just randomly start replacing parts at extra cost then still possibly have the same problem afterwards. Starting point a known weak part, cheap enough, might hit the bullseye first time.

My Octy only ever had a slight hesitation but I changed all the parts for peace of mind plus the cam follower. I also fitted a fuel pressure relief valve from the RS4 and that stopped the hesitation and flat spot I was experiencing.

I would get it on a rolling road at a vag specialist and they will see exactly what is and what isnt working from data logging.

It didnt cost me £250 to change everything as my local TPS store gave me a very good discount.

Bit of an update. Scanned for faults today even though there isn't a cel. Fault for low refrigerant as i suspect the compressor is knackered. But P0441 Evaporative emission control system incorrect flow. Any ideas anyone?

  • 1 year later...

@meaty101 did you find the fault in the end? I’m experiencing a similar problem to you and have the fault code of p0441.

The fault code I mention was the charcoal canister. I changed the purge valve first cleared the code but within a week it came back. So I fitted a new charcoal canister and the fault never returned. The lack of power was traced to a faulty d/v.
