Wheel / TyreBalance

Featured Replies

Misfortune decreed I pick up a large screw in my rear tyre last week. Sod's Law being what it is, made the screw enter on the very edge of the tread, near the tyre wall, meaning a new tyre was needed (£98 instead of a £20 repair !).

On collection I noticed no balance weights had been fitted, and when I queried this was assured that a zero reading had been given & therefore no weighting was required - apparently, a reading of 5 or less is safely ignored and no balance weights are then fitted.

I must add that the tyre fitting establishment is highly thought of, & I have no reason to doubt their explanation, but in 50 years of motoring, with numerous tyres fitted during that time, I have NEVER known an instance of balance weights not being needed - apparently approx 1 in 50 new tyres on new wheels (mine is just 2 months old) come into this category, requiring no balance weighting.

Thoughts, anyone ?

If there's no obvious vibration, what's the issue?

I think you're less liable to notice an unbalanced wheel on the rear than on the front plus I've never known any wheel that didn't need some sort of balancing! :mmm:

If there's no obvious vibration, what's the issue?

Give it a test, up to 70MPH of course   , and if there's no vibration, believe your tyre fitter.

Experienced the same thing.

No vibration no problem.

If you get a vibration at 70 drive through it and if it returnes at 140 it need balancing. You could double check if you like but you'll need to get to 280 mph.........
