My wife placed a pencil on the dash board. I set off and the pencil rolled towards the windscreen and is trapped out of sight between the dash board and windscreen. Any ideas how to get it out.

I remember from school that the point of a compass (circle drawing type) is ideal for spearing a pencil. 

Vacuum cleaner with a narrow nozzle and bodge tape on the end?

If it is a mechanical pencil that would stick to a magnet: measuring tape with a magnet on the end. If it is non-magnetic: same stuff but with some tacky glue or chewing gum. Try to aim using a dentist's mirror. If you can't see the pencil using a small mirror then it is probably gone for good (or until the next service visit where you can mention it, justifying the case with rattles).

I read someone's garage entry pass thing fell off from the ticket holder into the same abyss you are talking about. Gotta be careful with what you put there..
