Accelerator pedal stuck down but no revs!

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help diagnose a strange problem I had this morning.

I was driving slowly in traffic on the M1 this morning when I had to break hard as the traffic had come to a sudden halt. When I went to pull away I found the accelerator pedal was fully down! The engine was not revving, just idle. I pressed again and the engine revved enough for me to start pulling over in first but with the accelerator was still fully down fully down. As I was pulling over I pumped the accelerator pedal and it gradually came back toward me. Each time I pressed the pedal it came back a little further and I had slightly more revs when I pressed down again. Eventually after 5 or 6 pumps the pedal was pretty much back in the right position and I could accelerate fully again. I immediately rang my local garage (admittedly not a Skoda garage) and they said they hadn't heard of this problem before. I checked when I stopped and the pedal doesn't seem to have got stuck on anything (mat etc), plus if it had, the engine should have been revving like crazy. It was like the pedal got stuck but the computer didn't recognize the pedal hadn't returned to its resting position.

Getting it check out tomorrow, but still need to get home tonight in the mean time

Any idea what this could be?

Thanks in advance

Andy

The lack of revving is probably something to do with the accelerator pedal position sensor. It's not uncommon for the engine controller to shut down engine revs if it detects both accelerator and brake being pressed together. I'd have it scanned with VCDS and get the accelerator pedal assembly checked.

Thanks chimaera. Is the VCDS scan something they can do at any garage or do I need to take it to a Skoda garage?

VCDS is an aftermarket scan tool which works with VAG brand cars. It is more comprehensive than standard OBD/EOBD code readers in terms of functionality. Your independent might have it, or they may have other scan tools which can use VAG communication protocols. There are also a number of users on this site who have it. This thread has a list of people with it: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/262215-list-of-vcds-owners-previously-known-as-vag-com/

This sounds like you may have a problem with the throttle return spring (or with the pedal getting "hooked up" on something eene though it's not obvious.

What will have happened is that when you hit the brake the brake pedal switch cancelled the demand throttle signal (see Advanced Driving subforum on why you can't left foot brake in an Octavia) and then the EMS treated the "demand full throttle" signal as spurious.

It felt like a problem with the throttle return spring. I had a good look/feel around when i stopped to see if I could find anything that would have stopped it from coming back but couldn't find anything. I'll take it in to get checked out.
