New Columbus in MKII Octavia

Featured Replies

Hey guys

I was wondering if the newer Columbus (the one that comes in the mark 3 Octavia) would work in the mark 2 Octavia.

I'm not too familiar with the newer unit and don't know if the electronics are even compatible but there are lots of knowledgeable guys on here so I was wondering if anyone has tried it or knows if it works?

It's completely different. The old one is a single piece double din unit, while the new one is a two piece unit with a flat screen unit and a seperate dvd drive unit mounted in the glove box. You'll have physical issues making it fit, issues with the connections between the two units, and even then I'm not sure it'd function.

Thanks for your reply :)

I suspected it would be different.

I quite liked the Android Auto compatibility the newer unit it had and so was wondering if I could fit it in my mk2. Then again it's probably a gimmick I won't use very often.

I realise this is a bit of a thread resurrection but I found some updates I though others may be interested in.

I've been doing a lot of procrastinating recently (I have exams I should be revising for) and decided to look into this again, I'm glad I did as I have found some promising results!

There's a thread over on http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk where they were discussing fitting the newer headunits from the golf mk7 into a mk5. Whilst the unit they are discussing is not the Skoda Columbus, it does have a lot of the same features, including Android Auto. Initially there were some issues with wiring and component protection causing the headunit to shutdown but these seem to have been ironed out. If you go to the end of the thread there are some links to vendors in the UK who are installing and selling kits for mk5 and mk6 golfs. Whilst I haven't come across any examples of these units being fitted to an Octavia, due to the platform sharing with the Golf I think these should also work in the Octavia II.

Yep, that's the Discover Media unit, which is essentially the same as the Skoda Amundsen II. I have one here in the workshop which I'm working on.

Oh great! I hadn't realised there was a Skoda equivalent (it makes sense though).

Please keep us updated with how you get along!

Video evidence that it can be done to an Octavia II, it integrates with the maxidot too:

Yep, I've got it all working in the Yeti, just need to sort out / test the Bluetooth conflicts with the kit I have already fitted.

Awesome. May I ask where you bought the Amundsen from? Did you purchase a kit or install and sort out the component protection etc. yourself?

It's a VW Discover Media unit. I usually work on the previous generation Columbus units, but my supplier sent me this one in error so I'm playing with it to see what it's like. Seems okay at the moment. Component Protection was hard work..

Edit: Also gets the cd drive which the Amundsen misses out on.

What exactly is involved in getting the component protection to work? Is it a physical hack or a software patch that needs to be installed?

AFAIK, it's a hardware mod that resets a counter each time the unit turns on.

It's gives a maximum of 8 hours use, depending what the timer was before the hardware mod was done.

The timer isn't an issue on mine. It used to be that the run time was zero set, and whenever the unit was powered up it added to it until it got to 8 hours.  If you had the fix done at 7hrs 45min then you effectively got a unit which would work for 15 minutes. Not any more, and also I've got all the options activated, which used to be dependant on the options configured before being fixed.

Ah cool!

I was hoping that a better fix had been developed rather than just resetting the timer.
