Missing equipment - what compensation?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I took delivery of my Superb SEL EXEC Est 190 DSG yesterday and there are a few problems.

Minor chips/marks in front bumper.

Wrong wheels (ordered Surius, arrived with Modus)

Damaged chrome trim at bottom of one window.

Dealer agreed without hesitation to get front bumper sorted (marks are very minor) & had already ordered correct wheels before I had collected the car. When they arrive they will give me the option of keeping the 18" Modus & getting a refund for changing to the 19" Sirius as originally ordered. They will also give me a sportline as a courtesy car for 2-3 days plus a full tank of fuel. They are not aware of the chrome trim issue yet as I only just noticed this but I don't expect them to cause any problems changing this.

However, there is another problem I don't think they can fix. I ordered the car with the Traffic Sign Recognition, it has arrived without it. Dealer has checked and it was ordered correctly. They are going to speak to Skoda UK to see what can be done - I am not expecting this to be retro fitted, what compensation would you want? I had ordered the TSR so I could possibly add the Lane Guidance and Light Assist through coding.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

I assume the camera is missing then?

If so then I would be rejecting the car.

Thanks for the comments. I have not seen one with the TSR system myself since the test drive but that was 5 months ago and can't remember the detail. I queried with the dealer the fact that 'black plastic lump' on the windscreen behind the mirror was quite small, he said they are all the same size regardless of what equipment is fitted. Going through the menus there is no option for TSR.

My only issue with rejecting the car is that if it is re-ordered, I risk getting the next one after the road tax changes that are coming in. Also, I am not that bothered about the TSR - but haven't told the dealer that.

Notify the dealership immediately of anything like this, even if it's just a quick "I just noticed..." phone call to them. It helps to negate the "must have happened after you took delivery" arguments.

If this is a personal purchase out of your own packet and a new car then I'm with Gizmo. It should never have been handed over with any damage. These things are supposed to be picked up and rectified at PDI - even though it is a case of "what the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve about". As for wrong specification, Skoda UK are not exactly generous in offering compo so you'd be relying more on what the dealership are willing to offer. Local dealer had a Superb delivered with Alcantara when customer and dealer ordered leather. S-UK offered the difference in price between the two seat trim options as "compensation". Customer rejected the car (it became a showroom model).

Thanks for the advice. I only picked the car up thursday pm and noticed the damage last night. I will go over the car again this morning and then send dealer a photo. Given the other problems I have and their good response to these I don't expect them to cause an issue over the chrome trim - it should be a straight guarantee claim.

On the compensation for the TSR, I was thinking of asking them to pay for the first 2 services - effectively giving me the pre-pay service plan in the brochure which is £276. I wasn't sure if I could expect more though as they already owe me £85 - the cost of the TSR system.

Why not ask, especially as you really, really wanted TSR or you wouldn't have ordered it and taking into account the other issues on delivery!

The camera housing is quite large:

The camera itself is behind the clear triangle area of the screen:

This comes with numerous options (Lane Assist, TSR etc) but is needed if you want to have any of those options coded (with VCDS)

The L&K (I ordered) comes with the camera as std, but if I had ordered a car where it was an option and it had been missed off the order then I certainly would have rejected.

TSR on it’s own is no real big deal IMO which is why I didn’t spec it, I took the gamble that I could code it later.

Thanks for the photos and the comments. My camera housing is about a quarter of the size of that - it was what made me realise that it had been missed - I then checked the menus and it isn't listed. I had thought about coding some things and that was why I ordered the TSR - it was the cheapest way to get the camera needed for lane assist and light assist (although not sure I need/want them). However, not sure I can tell the dealer this.

I ordered a SEL Exec and then added loads of extras - I would have have an L & K but didn't want leather and alcantara is not an L & K option, so my approach with the dealer to push them is going to be that my order was based around adding to the SEl Exec to bring it near to L & K spec but I can't now do that - I am pretty sure they won't be able to fit the camera now.

I would have rejected the car if the camera was missing.

Latvian dealer rejected :(

and also registered letter to Škoda head Mr. Bernhard Maier didn't helped,

as answer they sent only e-mail - It is Škoda, deal with it!

Hi,

I had ordered the TSR so I could possibly add the Lane Guidance and Light Assist through coding.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

From memory when I bought my SEL exec, you could only order the TSR if you also spaced lane assist, otherwise there is no camera for it. Obviously the cost of lane assist is higher, because that includes the hardware. I thought I had heard of people coding TSR on a car with lane assist but not the other way around.

Maybe your dealer ordered an invalid combination of options?

I think my problem was due to an order change I made. A couple of days after I placed the order I added the TSR and changed the wheels from modus to Sirius. The car has been built as per the original order, the wheels are a simple fix. Don't think the TSR is. I don't want to reject the car as I am not that worried about the TSR, just want to see what I can get in compensation.

I hope the dealer doesn't visit this site!

I did think that!

Although I am in Kent the dealer isn't but don't want to name them in case they do look and read this thread - wouldn't help my case.

Only you can really judge what kind of compensation you'd be happy with. Like you, I'd just keep the car but ask for a service or two to sweeten it for me.

Then there is the reject camp. For me and for a small item like TSR which you've said you're not overly fussed for, rejecting is just cutting off your own nose to spite your face.

Another factor would be how well the dealer is doing to rectify the issue and by what you've said so far they are trying. So taking them to the cleaners would not be in my interest at this point.

It is always good to ask for advice and gain opinion but as I said, ultimately it's down to you and what you'd be happy with.

For an item like this missing, i would be in the camp of keeping the car however i would plant the seed with the dealer that you are thinking about rejecting the car.

What i would be happy with.....(first off, getting cash above the price of the option can be tricky) focus on things the dealer can give you within their control like service plan for a year or 2, refund for the missing extras and maybe some freebies like car mats, mudflaps, autoglym valet pack, heavy discount on OEM roof bars etc etc..

Thanks all for your comments. I will report back on what the dealer offers.

For me it wouldn´t be about the TSR feature itself, but the camera and the consequences following. I.e. not being able to code High Beam Assist and Lane Assist. Each to their own, but for me it would be a deal breaker.

But do you think I can mention this inability to code these items to the dealer or will their response be, you should have paid for these options?

No, I would not suggest to do so. I would just stick to the "I did not get what I´ve ordered" = you´ve godt a car without TSR.

Disregard the cost of doing so, but is it technically possible to retrofit ?  (or do the dealers not have the skill set to do so ? )

It IS possible, but it would be rather expensive. And I highly doubt the dealer will have the skills to do it. Add to that, that they have to cut out the windscreen on his brand new car to install a new one that houses the missing A5 camera.

My thought was also that it is possible (most things are possible if you throw enough money at them!!) but it would be very expensive and also may not end up being done right.

Bizarrely this is the second time i have come across the problem of a car being delivered wrongly - it happened previously on a Peugeot - was delivered wrongly twice!!! First time the car was rejected and the second time it was closer to being right & accepted (car was due to have a self park system, turned up first time without even having front parking sensors - dealer has registered car, done PDI etc and not noticed, after 3 months second car turned up with front parking sensors but no self park system - wasn't ever available on the car and brochure/ordering system were both wrong). Got guarantee extended from 3 to 5 years plus 5 years free servicing (normally £350 per year) and courtesy car for 3 months while waiting for second car.

Sounds to me like the dealer is already performing far better than the vast majority of franchised Skoda dealers out there.

Sorting the bumper and ordering the correct wheels before you even knew would suggest to me they are keen to keep you happy.

Your initial thoughts around a refund of the missing £85 option plus two free services sounds fair to me.
