Fitting mudflaps front & rear

Featured Replies

Hi,

Well I finally fitted the blasted things - following HellFire's guide for the rear mudflap fitting with a few minor changes to his suggestions :)

The front mudflaps were a total PITB to fit - it's the clip part that gave me the trouble, the rest was easy enough.

Managed to get the clips in eventually but I will recheck if they're tight enough later on.

As I had to do this in the carpark - multi-level job with tube lights, handy when it's 8PM :D - at my work I did not have a proper jack with me, and after seeing the thread showing what could happen with the factory jack I did not fancy my chances.

Just turned the steering wheel to one extreme or the other to get access to the screws involved. The clip was done using a screw-down clamp, there has to be a better way, any tips we could add to HellFire's guide/add the front ones to the guide?

The rear ones then:

Couldnt remove the wheels as per above which makes it a little tricky. The middle selftapper within the wheel arch part didn't seem to grab very much, managed to get it to go eventually and it's not moving now. The one at the bottom - I first installed the little metal clip within the cutout in the bumper, then fitted the mudflap starting from the top down, using a screw driver (flat one) to bend the rubber open.

The cutting of the bumper was remarkably easy considering I did not have the wheels removed, it's tricky to get the knife started off but then just follow the thing down.

Once again thanks to HellFire for the excellent photos & guide, it made the whole thing a relatively easy job, although a bit more challenging due to the wheel situation

Must clean the rest of the car now though as the mudflaps are currently the least muddy thing on the car :P

I have the rears to grapple with this w/e.

For the fronts, I also turned the wheels which gave ample space. Yup, the clips are a PITA/B. I had an adjustable plumbing pliers thingy which helped a lot and to help matters along, I drenched the clip in WD40.

Thanks VW VRS, I think your the 1st person to also have an issue with the self tapper on the bottom of the rear mudflap, it's a real pain in the @rse.

Glad it all worked out, any ammendments to the guide, PM me or just add it to the end of the sticky post.
