steering/ suspension issues

Featured Replies

I'm finding that i have to steer to the right to be able to drive in a reasonble straight line. Its now effecting how i sit in the car and find i lean to the right slightly!

From what i can tell the two stalks are at the same position but the LH steering wheel spoke is level with the indicator stalk and the right one alot lower than the washer/wiper stalk from my eye line. Not that thats help explain it!

Now this is clearly to me related to the front wheel alignment because also the front left tyre is worn alot more than the right one. They seem to be even across the tyre so i'm thinking toe-in settings.

Is this a resonble thinking? I know people have always said its normal to steer off and blame the road camber and also roundabouts but i cant say ive ever driven it wit the steering wheel in the correct position.

I'm tempted to get skoda to look at the wheel toe settings when its in for its service in afew weeks though.

People thoughts please

I trip to a wheel alignment specialist for you mate.

I would go sooner rather than later as it will increase tyre wear as you have already noticed.

Cheers.

i did notice it was bad on the last set before i had the fronts changed last year. After getting quickfit to have a look i then got skoda to do a check and fix it properly while up in scotland last august. I think it might just get worse as the tyres wear down.

Didnt think suspension settings were generally available for VAG cars?

Never really needed my previous cars checking so dont really know of any. I'll have a look on the web.

Hi

The front tyres always wear more on the nearside as a result of the car effectively steering up the camber most of the time and the relative speeds in roundabouts. Mine was starting to need a little steering correction at 10,000 miles on the Cont Sport SCIIs. At service I had the tyres rotated and the car now drives straight and true again.

As for wear patterns, if the car wears the tyres evenly accross the tread, the geometry is normally OK. If you start wearing edges out first, then tyre pressure, toe in, suspension bushes or driving style can be possible causes.

Thanks Stu for that link, answered my next question about aftermarket springs not being linear compared to standard!

I remember it was as bad like this last year and after the tyres were changed it was back to normal but i'll look to get looked at. There's a few places around Crawley so i'll see.

Now i spend most my life on the motorways and the road camber isnt always obvious and surely in a lane the difference between each wheel would be quite small.

Cant say i drive around many roundabouts, but would have thought the inside wheel would be worse at it has less distance to travel at a greater slip angle.
