Best compound suggestions

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've got a DAS6 Pro Plus which I've been using on my outgoing Mondeo with Meguiars 105 and 205 with some success.

In the next week or so, I should take ownership of my new Octavia VRS is Race Blue.

What compounds would people suggest? I don't even know if Skoda paint is considered to be medium or hard!

I've been reading threads on here and Detailing World but am none the wiser?

Thanks.

Hey buddy.

I'd say Skoda paint is on the medium side really, so not to dissimilar from ford. Maybe slightly harder, but no real difference.

If you're used to the Megs system, I'd stick with it. Every polish takes time to get used to them, and although I've not used the megs system, I've heard good things about them, especially 205.

Thanks for the reply Hunty.

I do like the Megs polishes but wondered if there were any better alternatives really. I've heard good stuff about Scholl and Metzerna specifically.

I've used both School and Menzerna, both are good but Menz has a longer work time to break down. So school is a bit quicker but both are decent!!

It's another area of detailing that causes confusion simply because of all the different products.

We, myself included, often look to alternatives for various reasons but, personally, I'd stick with M105 & M205. Great products providing great results.

You've a decent machine, good polishes....what pads do you use? You could always look at different pads?

With respect to paint I'd say forget generic ideas of certain manufacturers having certain pain types. As with all correcting, assess the paint on a case by case basis by starting with the least aggressive pad n polish combo.

I know of a vRS having very hard paint n needing a wool pad to correct the defects, thus throwing the 'theories' out of the window.

Let us know how you get on n post a few pics if you get chance!

All the best

David

Hi Chubbs, thanks for your reply.

I've been happy with the Megs products but am looking to buy a new machine (DAS6 Pro as the existing machine is a loaner) and most come with compounds. I've been using Hex Logic pads which seem good.

Maybe I'm best to stick with what I know, like you said. Trouble is, as someone who enjoys d tailing, I'm always on the lookout for the new 'best product!'

Not too much to add to the above - the Megs combo is tried and tested.

I know KarlvRS loves 105/205 and rates it highly with his DAS DA.

I use Scholl S30,  S17+ and S3 XXL. on multi stage details.

But for most of 2016 - i found that Sonax 04-06 was the polish for me...especially single stage.

So little dust or splatter from this compound and the working time is just amazing - i cant fault it.

Finishes down really well every time and on many different paint types.

Should you order from CYC... they stock it....and its highly recommended

You're very welcome. The Megs polishes with the hex pads work well together. If you've ever watched the 'Junkman' detailing vids on YouTube you'll be familiar with his phrase "technique trumps product every time".

If you're after a DA then I'd save the cash n keep your current pads n polishes, just a personal opinion of course. If you have plenty of time n money then go for it, just don't want you to become frustrated using different products n not getting the results you want.

The new best product will always exist n when you've spent up on the marketing hype then you'll wonder what it's all about. There are some extremely good products out there, don't get me wrong, but folks often have preferences....what works for one doesn't another.

I can see where you're coming from David, but the OP may not be suited to using the Megs system. I started on Menzerna, got great results and it was fine. I tried Scholl and it suited my technique better, so my technique with that progressed and I sped up. Now I am with the Sonax polishes and with those I've machined a 4x4 in bad nick in a day, to pretty good effect.

So use up the Megs, but have a play when you've run out.

And good advice to start out with the least aggressive combo. Just gave the OP a heads up compared to what he is used to. I've worked on a few Skoda's and Ford's.

Great results there! Yeah, understand you, just my interpretation of the OPs initial post lead me to believe he was having success with the Megs. I guess Dominic could always appropriate a few samples along the way to have a play with prior to shelling out.

Can't beat a sample or two, David. Great way to see what suits.

Not used to using a DA as i predominantly use rotary or VRG however Scholl And Koch Chemie are great.

Scholl Favorites - S20 Black, S30+, S40, S17+

Koch Favorites - H8, F5, M2.

Koch F5 Breaks down so well you could almost get away with using it as a finishing polish on the correct pad and technique with a rotary

This is H8 followed by F5

In the end, I decided to stick with what I've used and got the DAS 6 Pro with Megs 105/205 and Hex Logic pads. Also sneaked a bottle of the Sonax 04-06 too!

Thanks for the advice. Will post some pics once it's arrived and I've had the chance to use it.

Big fan of 105/205 on the DAS6-PRO. Great buy. Also a huge fan of 0406. Works for ages, haven't had any dust issues and great for single stage on softer/intermediate paints.

I've recently started using Megs 205 on a Dodo Juice orange pad for compounding and Megs 105 on a Dodo Juice black pad for polishing via a Kestrel DA. Follow the instructions on the bottles. Works for me :D

It does produce a fair amount of dust, but it's a good system. Nothing a good rinse off afterwards doesn't sort out. Or a coat snow foam and a rise works.
