Octavia 4x4 Brake Discs

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have  2014 Octavia 4x4 2.0TDI, 46,000 miles and have just been advised that I need to replace the rear brake discs. I queried the advise as they were replaced at 24,000 - has any one else had similar experiences with genuine Skoda parts? I would expect brake discs to last longer than 23,000 when the majority of the driving is in central Scotland & on motorways.

Any advice appreciated.

Ask why they say the discs need replacing (without prompting!) - because of scoring or pitting, because they are below the minimum recommended thickness or because of the difference in thickness between the area where the pads are and the rest of the disc?

Over the years I've had several dealers tell me I needed new discs and on inspection they were telling porkie pies, one told me I needed new discs at 1 year & 15,000 miles but the same discs they told me were still OK 9 years and 70,000 miles later... go figure.

I'd my first set of discs replaced vountarily at 70000 miles in a 2.0l PDI. Just thought it was a good idea. But your mileage is plain silly. But possible that the hand brake is sticking on and causing premature rear wear or the pistons are jamming and not allowing full contact with the discs. IIRC my Passat B5.5 had trouble with rust on the edge of the discs as well. But as said, ask questions or get a trusted second inspection/quote.

Welcome to the forum.

Location, location, location

Central Scotland  / Motorways are the perfect location for the short life of Skoda brake discs. Damp, cold and Gritted (salted roads) Winters 2014,15 & now 16.

Overnight corrosion just cosmetic and on the edges.

Which Dealerships 'Advised' replacing the discs, Arnold Clark, Parks, Ingrams or West End?

?

Do they need changing really or would they like some Up-selling'?

Do they say they are 80% worn?

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

The dealership is Arnold Clark Skoda, Edinburgh. The first set were replaced, by them, at 24519 miles due to scoring & pitting and I've just been told that the 2nd set now need replacing at 46511 miles. While I appreciate that the central belt of Scotland is damp with gritted roads the disc brakes on the other car (Fiat) don't need replaced every 22-24k miles. As such I suspect some Up-selling is taking place.

Has anyone tried any other after market discs?

SIR ARNOLD CLARK never ended up as a Billionaire & with the Biggest Independent Motor Group in Europe without Workshops making sure 'Advise' is not given out,

even 'UP-SELLING' Advice.

VW Group / Skoda discs are rubbish, but not as rubbish as AC Dealerships would have you believe.

It is a shame that customer get treated like cash cows / golden geese.

A friend of my sis had a Fiat Punto that was "serviced" by Arnold Shark; it cost more per year in service bills than sis's Nissan Micra, Mum's Honda Civic and my own Citroen Xantia combined! Enough said?

AC do like to "strongly recomend that this part needs replacing sir".............a bit more than is 100% necessary!

I have ATE power groove discs but you can get the plain ATE discs, very well made & better machining etc than most OEM stuff & aftermarket!

EBC stay away from.............I used to 100% recommend ( & had several sets, but the last stuff me & a mate had was poor quality & yes it was their stuff & not ebay rip of...........

Can only speak as you find! I find mine fine!

I agree with most of the above comments. Brake discs and pads are one of the easiest things for a garage to recommend.

Easy ££££££££

I got put over a barrel at my first MOT by an Aberdeen (small) garage who called me at work to tell me my rear discs were corroded on the inside surface (where I obviously hadn't noticed a problem). I beat him down for new wipers in the same visit as they'd been working fine on my drive to work that morning. Bastids.

Arrange for your own inspection and replacement if necessary. Try and avoid "distress" purchasing at MOT time.

Walk away from the dealer trying to sell an "urgent repair".

I'm using an independent garage very close to home to do my MOTs and servicing as and when it suits me.

Sometimes use the nearest SKODA dealer, like whe they had a package deal for servicing last year.

  • 7 months later...

New rear discs at 28,000 2 years, Skoda paid 50%. OE parts fitted and now 20 months on they need replacing again and now 52,000. Disgraceful. Corrosion I expect to see on a car many years older, MkII vRS did 140,000 and no need for replacements until then.....
