Hatch or Estate

Featured Replies

Saw both the hatch and estate Superb today. Extremely impressive car but can't decide which I prefer.

Is one longer than the other ?

What have most people opted for?

They are both the same length, I went for the estate on my MKII as IMO the hatch is fugly, however on the MKIII i think the hatch looks great, as I do not need the extra height in the back that the estate offers I was happy to go with the hatch.

IMO they both look as good as each other now.

I ordered the hatch as I didn't need the extra space and the hatch has a massive boot anyway. I liked the look of the hatch better, when I first saw the car I thought it was a salon. I leased the car and they were both the same price so decision wasn't based on cost saving. I've only seen very few hatch backs, estate seems more popular.

Thanks re length. I wasn't sure.

I quite like the hatch and it is definitely large but without the height of the estate.

I am leaning towards the hatch but worried in case I need the height at some point.

Hatch is great and I don't need the extra height but I just prefer estate cars.

I have a Hatch sportline - but it went back as I had an issue. So,they leant me an estate.

The Hatch is actually 4mm longer than the estate ! The Hatch is very slightly quieter road noise wise, the boots are massive on both. The estate is just squared off a little, but not for the sake of any less headroom.

Unless your carrying to the max, the Hatch will be fine - but I think the estate looks a little better than the Hatch......so that's an unbiased view If there ever was one !post-149236-0-86314600-1483907695_thumb.jpg

Having a small child we went for the Estate and managed to completely fill the boot (below the cover) but I expect as he is getting older we would only need the hatch next time. Having that massive boot for tip runs is handy though.

For me, the estate is the better looking car.

I think if you go for the Estate you have to have the panoramic sunroof, so I saved a few bob (probably the best part of £2.5k) by going for the Hatch, I also don't need the extra height in the rear that the Estate gives you.

I think they are both great.  Tried a hatch and estate, drove exactly the same.

I personally have ordered an estate as I need the bigger boot, hatch is still massive though.  With 2 young children I need the space for holidays etc.

Won't be disappointed with either, great car.

I think I've seen more estates on the road than hatches but then the hatch was quite a step change for Skoda compared to the estate, I don't think the Mark II and III estate look that different, for me it's not apparent without a 2nd glance which model it is. I was initially looking at the estate because I've had them in the past and they are useful, but when I saw how huge the boot was on the hatch and how it looked in the flesh I went with the hatch. If height is a consideration then the estate is a no brainer, but for most uses and looks I think go with the hatch.

Oddly, hatch is a few mm longer.

I like both, but in side profile I love the upswept angle of the rear window. The estate does not have this and that is a shame. But otherwise love both versions.

When ordering mine i also noticed the hatch is just a fraction longer according to the specs.

I had the same decision to make and decided to go for the estate - I preferred the look (with the roof rails included) and thought at some point if I go for hatch, I would have wanted the extra boot space. Given the roof is so long on the estate I went for the panoramic roof also, partly because I wanted the glass roof but partly because I think such a long roof looks better with the panoramic roof. I would play about with the 3d viewer on the skoda website - comparing the two and also look through the picture thread on here showing actual cars - loads of great pictures. Having now had mine for a month, it is such a nice car and you won't go wrong either way.

I do a lot of kayaking so roof rails are a must plus the extra height in the estate boot comes in handy every now and then. I also think that the side storage is better designed in the estate and the retractable cover is more practical compared to the parcel shelf.

Thanks for all the feedback. Very useful and a lot to think about ;)

I was initially looking at the estate as I'm currently in the Leon ST (bigger boot than an A6 Avant) but when I realised just how big and practical the boot on the Superb hatch was I quickly changed my mind.  I would say unless you have dogs or are a traveling dishwasher salesman then the hatch should be more than practical enough for most people.

As above the estate gets a panoramic roof whilst the hatch's sunroof has a much smaller aperture.

Both body styles look great though, IMO.

We went for the hatch since its still massive and quite a bit cheaper. No point in paying for space you will never use.

The Hatch is very slightly quieter road noise wise,

We have tested 4 Octavias over the years and would probably have bought one this time but for 2 reasons. 3 were estates and road noise on all of them was truly dreadful, the hatch was fine for road noise. 2 estates and the hatch were 1.4 TSi's the other estate was a 150 diesel. The other reason was looks, we do not like the the hatch and then the garage said they had stopped taking orders for Octavias, only stock cars so easy decision to get the smart looking Superb Hatch.
