Should I book in for a service.

Featured Replies

Since I retired I do very little mileage

The dealer rang to ask if I wanted to book in, as It was last done in Feb 2016.

I appreciate penny pinching by not having servicing is false economy but as I've only done 5000k miles is it necessary, or can I wait a bit.

Incidentally this is the same dealer who wanted me to have my cam belly changed. When I enquired with three other dealers and skoda uk and gave them my vin it turned out I have a chain rather than a belt so he expensive job would have been unecessary, so I haven't got a lot of faith in them.

Car is 61 reg and has done 45 k miles

Skoda recommend every year or every 15000 km for an oil change service according to the maintenance manual.

Thanks

Do you mean which ever comes soonest.?

I was just thinking that say you had a car that was bearly used for a long time would still need it after a year.

Yes, whichever occurs first. The theory being that low mileage drivers are doing more short trips which are harder on the oil, plus there are time dependent items on the schedule as well. I'm in a similar situation as I only do about 8-10000 km per year and a lot of that is trips of around 10 km or less.

Personally I would leave it until just before Easter so stretch it a few months and probably look for another dealer as the one you use does not seem competent.I am sure a forum member can recommend someone good local to you?

Thanks... I'm in Solihull west mids

Oil doesn't just degrade with mileage, personally for the sake of £149 I'd be happy to pay for fresh oil once a year. It is after all the lifeblood of any engine and turbo.

Cars actually like regular runs, higher mileage. Short and irregular journey's mean the engine doesn't get hot often enough which takes its toll on engine components and the oil itself. This is exactly when you want fresh oil.

It is worth noting that even on the petrol engine it is likely that the same oil was used for the fixed interval (12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever is reached first) and the variable interval (up to 2 years or 20,000 miles) so leaving it beyond 12 months won't do much harm.

Cheers

Is the the 1.8TSI you've got? (Can't see as on mobile site). As the tensioner is sensitive to oil pressure, I'd want the best oil in to ensure its working at its best.

Do you also do lots of short journeys?

Yep 1.8 tsi

Yes lots of short journeys with the occasional long one.

Then get it serviced. Better to spend £150 on a service than fix a damaged engine!

Would it even make sense to have just an oil change mid way between services, or is that going too far

I'd just get it done annually, unless you can find somewhere or someone cheap enough to do it
