Vibrating sound when speed reaches 75KM/Hr

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have Skoda Octavia Pre FL with Automatic gearbox and its done 149000 KMs.

off late i have noticed strange sound when speedo is between 75-80 KM/HR and 100-105 KM/HR, its sounds like phone ringing in vibrate mode.

I changed right side alloy wheel with the normal rim and this sound started betwen 65-70 KM/HR.

Any clues what could be the issue?

I had that once, it was the make of tyre that was causing a hum on some road surfaces .

the noise disappeared when I had changed the tyre after a puncture.

Lots of things it "could" be. Based on the change in vibration from changing a single wheel, first area of focus should probably be wheels / tyres. Was it the front you changed with the spare?

Suggest getting wheels and tyres re-balanced and inspected. If that doesn't work, try swictching front wheels / tyres to rear of car and rear to front and see if vibration goes away or reduced..

Yes i changed front right with spare.

This are 9K KM old Continental MC5 205/55 R16 tyres.

I tried bring rear to front and front to rear but things didn't improve.

I can hear this sound on any surface as soon as i reach 75KM/hr and it disappears post 80KM/hr, starts again at 100 KM/hr.

Anything to do with wheel hub?

Yes, it is possible, It could be a bearing or a driveshaft or even something else. Though, normally you'd expect the problem to be more consistent from a certain speed up.

I'd try and totally eliminate tyres first, even though they are fairly new.  Have you tried having them balanced again? Are they the same tyre and age on the rear or a different make?

Have you or garage carefully checked over rims and tyres for visible damage?

When you moved front to back did you do it on both sides?

They are same model and same age and perfectly balanced.

Yes i did move tiers on both side

Had any other work done on the car recently?

What about a loose plastic cover underneath that's vibrating with the air flow under the body somewhere.?

I have recently had a similar noise which I thought was the unevenly worn tyres, turns out it was the front wheel bearings which had done 180k miles so we're probably over due for replacement, it has transformed the car, there was no play in the worn bearings even though they were dry and very rough off the car.

I had installed TPMS sensors, will remove them and check.

Have checked but didn't find anything loose, anything specific to lookout?

Thanks. I will check health of bearing. Do you have part no.?

Sorry, don't know the part no., I got mine from ECP with the 30% discount they were doing over Xmas, pretty easy job to fit as long as you have the tools.

Thank you everyone.. Wheel bearing was the culprit.. problem solved by replacing them.

Glad to hear that you have fixed it.
