Brakes fabia

Featured Replies

Brakes work fine at speed.then the next time at slow speed it feel as if they are worn out, grinding? Then work fine again.then the next time grinding and almost no brakes at all.then fine again. HELP.

Replace the pads before you destroy the discs.

Discs and pads appear fine. discs are smooth and lots of meat on the pads

Rears as well?

Yes

It must be a vacuum leak, is the pedal harder at low speed?

Still look at the pads

Mine looked fine when i bought the car but the brakes were useless.

Replaced the discs and pads and they are excellent.

Could be they are glazed over from binding brakes or just light use and not recently changed

Another place to look is the brake servo vacuum line- they split once they are old and could be loosing power assistance if there is a leak

I found out the less ideal way that my handbrake wasn't working correctly trying to get out at a very steep junction.

Took it in this morning and one of the shoes is rusted shut.

Replacing both very worn drums and two new brake shoes as well as a replacement handbrake cable. £350

Thats alot of money!

I replaced my handbrake cables today as one was rusted and snapped, and the other stretched. cost me £14 and a few hours

Yeah it's a bit of a bummer during the January money drought, but I don't want to be dangerous on the road, rolling back at that junction **** me up no end!

I stuck the handbrake on and immediately started rolling back down the hill. I quickly hit the foot brake again, but really struggled to get the gas+gears biting whilst the car was rolling back, and I only have the two feet. I'm a very inexperienced driver, but I think anyone would have struggled a bit in that situation!

Had I bought the stuff on EuroCP, it would have cost me about £120 for the lot. Unfortunately I don't have any axle stands to keep the wheels up off the ground, or the time to do it. Next time however, I've found two very reputable VAG specialists in the Bristol area. One of the reviews said that the customer bought the parts separately and got the lads to simply fit them for a very good price.

I think this will be my first an only time using Kwik Fit if I can help it!

Could have been worse if after the initial slipping back, you were now 5mm from a front bumper!

Look forward quite a few years, your car will have "hill hold" or some other form of "aid"!

In desperation, a few years ago I let QF change my rear shoes . Never again. I'd struggle to do it my self in spite of a well dodgy hip,as I found out when I took it for a retest on MOT that they'd filled the rears with air( I took it that the new shoes needed bedding in ). I won't post what the tester said about QF.

They shouldn't even have touched the hydraulics just to change shoes.

I would never ever take my car to Slow Fit.

Whats the name of the VAG specialists? I'm interested to know in case i ever need to get anything done as im not sure whats about round me. I'm only in Trowbridge and am regularly in and around bristol so would be helpful knowing where to go.

Both seem to be very reputable and well established. There is Blade Skoda in city centre but they only touch cars  <= 8 years old.

Pretty much decided on using these two in future for anything else. KF have done a horrible scope-creeping job on me.

Cheers, will keep these in mind in case I need anything in the future

Well, I took the spanking. £350 large, new drums, shoes and a refit of the handbrake cable, but I have to say the thing feels much safer, so I won't complain for now!

WDL, how did you get on with your brakes?
