ŠKODA servicing & car maintenance Plan Cost

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'll be taking delivery of my brand new Octavia VRS in a couple of weeks and wanted to get your thoughts on the

ŠKODA servicing & car maintenance Plan

The dealer has mentioned it to me but not got the price yet, does anyone know the average price the dealers sell this plan for, and is it worth it?  (I'll be doing between 20,000 & 25,000 miles a year)

Thanks for your time

The only benefits of paying up front will be fixing the costs at today's rates and avoiding dodgy dealers over charging. Should pay about 149 for a minor service and 239 for a major.

Hope that helps

I think that the £149 price has changed to £179 but many dealers are still honouring the earlier.

I've just had my first service at £179

Always ask for a discount! I had my first service for £100& vat.

It's £149 for a minor and £269 for a major, see here...

At 20,000 to 25,000 miles per year most people will advise the variable service intervals (up to 2 years / 20,000 miles).

However what you don't mention is if the car is yours or if it is a lease car. Also how long are you planning on keeping it? These points should influence your decision on the frequency of the services.

If it is your car and you plan to keep it well beyond the 3 year warranty period you might decide fixed intervals (10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is reached first) would be preferred. This would result in two oil changes per year. Some will argue this is overkill and unnecessary, others might suggest that fresh oil is the lifeblood of an engine and turbo, essential for component longevity.

If the car is a company car, a PCH (lease) or you won't be keeping it beyond 3 years then it should be all about keeping costs as low as possible i.e. as few services as possible.

The important point to consider here is the dealers will confuse the hell out of you but remember these facts:

1) All servicing before the car is 3 years old or has covered 60,000 miles consist of an oil and filter change, nothing more. This is essentially the £149 minor service.

2) If you pay for a £269 variable service before the above age/mileage then you are being ripped off, they won't change any components that aren't changed in the minor service.

3) The only difference between the minor (fixed) and major (variable) service is the air filter, fuel filter (diesel) and spark plugs (petrol). Not much for the extra £120.

4) The extra parts listed in point 3 can often be paid for separately for less than the £120 difference between the minor and major services.

5) Dealers will try everything they can to charge you more. There are only ever two prices to pay - £149 or £269.

6) Only ever pay the £269 if you can be sure you are getting the extra parts.

7) Some dealers try to charge £179 (or thereabouts) for an 'interim' service. If nothing is being replaced over and above the £149 minor service they are over charging.

So, assuming the service plan is for either 2 or 3 years the price should not exceed the following:

2 year plan:

Year 1 = £149 minor

Year 2 = £149 minor

TOTAL = £298 or £13 per month.

3 year plan:

Year 1 = £149 minor

Year 2 = £149 minor

Year 3 = £269 major

Brake Fluid = £52

TOTAL = £619 or £17 per month.

Be very careful with plans that also include maintenance, these generally cover wear and tear parts such as tyres but you have to be sure you are going to wear through your tyres fast enough to justify the extra outlay.

Let us know what they quote you.

Thanks guys

I'm looking at the maintenance / service plan for the car.  I'm getting on PCP, and the millage will be high every year, so want to protect myself as the plan covers everything from exhaust to brake discs / pads and clutch / gearbox, this is whats at the back of my mind, it would probably save me in the long run with the millage I'm doing

I've not been told what this plan will be, but will let you know

Also look at a PCH with maintenance. Maybe only 2 years at that mileage. Should be cheaper than a PCP.

Try someone like

Nationwide car contracts

Select car leasing

Here is a manual diesel vRS hatch, fully maintained, 3 years @ 20K mileage on a personal lease (PCH)...

https://www.contracthireandleasing.com/car-leasing-companies/independent-brokers/jet-vehicle-finance/skoda/octavia/124404699/

£295 per month on a 9+35 (9 monthly payments as a deposit for month 1, 35 following individual monthly payments).

So amortised over the full 36 month term = 44 x £295 divided by 36 = £360 per month all in.

Shop around though, this isn't likely to be the cheapest deal but good for an initial comparison with your fully maintained PCP quotes.

The £149 deal is only applicable if the car is set to fixed interval servicing.

Mine is set to variable - 15,000 miles at 11 months is when it needed its first service.

I'm not saying they do any more than the £149 but that's the loop hole......

There is another loop hole, it is for cars three years and younger.

Irrespective of the small print all good dealers will honour the £149 fixed price regardless of service interval or age.

If they won't then vote with your feet. The only reason dealers attempt to charge more is because we pay it!

Hi there.

I bought my VRS four weeks ago and entered the service plan.

I only do 12,00 a year but was quoted around £451 for the three servicings.

That works out just over £16 a month.

Thats a pretty good price esp as its a fixed contracted price so if prices change then your service plan price wont. Hope this hells

regards.
