Where do you put your phone charging cable?

Featured Replies

I have a nice 2 port QuickCharge 2.0 charger in the car for my phone. I have it plugged in to the front 12v socket but you then can't close the cover.

I've thought about hiding it behind the dash (that's the easy bit) but there isn't a good place to route the cable out through. After some inspiration!

I think if I was going to do a custom/integrated setup, I'd probably try do something inside the driver's armrest or the glovebox.

Would the easiest option to be to buy an MMI to USB cable and connect that up in the driver's armrest storage area? I'm assuming you have an MMI port in there of course.

I've plugged mine into the 12v on the back of the drivers armrest. Then tucked the cable down the side of the seat to the cupholders.

use the rear one

I use the ash tray 12v outlet when driving then simply unplug the cable and plug and leave them in the ash tray, with the cover closed as I always take the phone with me.

Just found the photo below on the interweb. My car has this cover below the AUX connection. Is there an MMI behind it? I had assumed it was a blank where an MMI connection would be if my car had been fitted with one..? Or is it a case of one could be fitted if you got the connector plus loom and had it coded...?

Sorry mine is a grey connection not white as I thought (see attached). I don't have a copy of the relevant manual handy, but I'd say if you don't have the plug then there would be no wiring to the area for it.

Not necessarily - my late model Elegance had things like the Columbus, front and rear heated seats, automatic parking, bixenon etc. Included as standard. Lots of goodies but no MMI unless you specifically got it as a paid for option. Only the AUX was standard.  It is weird.

My SE Business doesn't have MMI either.

Also  puzzled  how  my car has a 150bhp  engine,  did  they  start  fitting  the  new engine  out of the  superb 3 into  the  last  remaining  superb 2s

No MDI in mine. It's not that biggest of power either. I've got everything together. Now to get on with it!

I've made a start, piggy back fuse, 14awg cable and adapter. 20170204_202158-1494x2656.jpg20170204_202208-2656x1494.jpg

Tested on my bench supply to make sure it's all working.

I've routed it across the back of the footwell, tucked into the plastic trim. I removed the side panel off the tunnel and ran it up to the buttons.

I've taken a blank out and started modding it. 20170205_140441-1494x2656.jpg20170205_140448-1494x2656.jpg

I drilled and filed it out to the right size. You can also cut with a decent blade easily enough. I've used sugaro mouldable epoxy to hold in the space and cover some of the cuts where they were slightly oversized. It's just setting at the moment.

Here is the latest status. I've got the cable secured in to the blank. Cuts are ok but could be better. Could always redo it at a later date if I wanted to. 20170207_060019-747x1328.jpg

I took an ignition jumper spur off the fuse board, added a cigar socket, shoved a twin USB adapter in that, popped a lightening cable in and dropped it in to the drop down tray to the right of the steering column. I use the other USB socket to power the dashcam.

Or, use the rear 12V socket, (behind the armrest), open the armrest and lead the cable between the armrest and the box, (under the hinge), coil the excess cable into the box and then out of the front of the box under the front of the armrest and on to the sliding cover of the cupholder, (under the hand brake), which is where you lay the phone.  Works perfectly.

I don't like that approach for 2 reasons. 1) kids do use that outlet when we're in the car as a family and 2) the bulk of the charger is ungainly and I don't like it!

I've had most of the bits to do it so thought I'd try something different for cost of a few blanks.

Installed the blank today

I've ordered from HK a right angled USB on both ends to reduce the cable height.

Got to do the other blank now.

The USB adapter socket is mounted in the fuse box area?
