Sky TV losing discovery network

Featured Replies

Marketing ploy possibly

According to discovery network sky are refusing to pay fair money for network channels

This is  despite announced price increase for sky subscribers in march April

So no more discovery channels  Eurosport and TLC

Fastnloud

Goldrush

Wheeler dealers

Will only be on BT and virgin from Feb 1st

Is it a ploy toake discovery as a additional add-on subscription ??

Sorry worded wrong on op I'll edit

Article I read is that discovery want more money and sky want to pay less then they already do....

Looks like a spat between Sky and Discovery will result in Sky pulling all Discovery channels and Eurosport off their platform from 1st Feb!!! Not a happy chappy at all :(

Well wheres a message scrolling across the top of Quet right now to inform us all that from feb 1st i might not be able to watch (wheeler dealers) or Quest as a sky customer anymore.

One more reason (no quest, dmax) to dump the sky subscription..

Eurosport is part of the Discovery group and at the moment you can get a one year subscription for £19.99 if anyone is interested.

Quest is a freeview channel anyway though isn't it?

As a free channel I think it would be part of the freesat system as well as freeview. If so it should still be available on sky as a freesat channel?

Ah but... we are in roi which may play differently to uk..

According to the Freesat page Quest isn't available via that platform so it's either Freeview, Virgin or BT TV. No Dave on Freesat either. I have BT TV and have Quest, Dave and Discovery etc.

No as Lee says there are a few differences between Freesat and Freeview Quest and Dave being the most notable two. I've basically no digital tv signal so have to live with the sat signal.

Not sure how true it is but I have also heard Sky are planning to ditch the Sky Dish in favour of streaming using SkyQ

I will definitely be getting rid of sky if they ditch the only channels I watch

I'm waiting to get through to Sky on the phone just now to tear them a new one!!!...According to their website all the Discovery and Euro Sport channels are going off their platform on Wednesday!!!.....Not a happy bunny this morning!!!! Right just off the phone with Sky Ireland and they will all be going off the platform on Wednesday along with Quest and ID channel. Sky are offering no discount to the package price so it looks like it will have to be a threaten to move to get a better deal or actually suck it up and move to Virgin with their horrific on screen menu!!!!

I think what's happening is that Sky will offer yet another package that's a streaming only service yet still offer the traditional dish service.

Great if you live in an area that restricts putting up a dish and you've got a decent FTTC/ FTTP connection. Not so great if you live in The Highlands with 20Mb ADSL and you want to watch a 4K film.

I think that the streaming services are still maturing and we'll see a gradual move to streaming only and more providers come and go. Wouldn't be shocked to see Sky end up in some sort of merger with Netflix or an other streaming service.

If TV broadcasts can be removed that'll free up a nice bit of the spectrum for yet more wireless data.

II did make me wonder; if you can prove that Sky don't stream BBC content could that be a way out of paying the licence fee? Assuming Sky could block BBC content at the customers behest.

Sky already own Now TV, so don't think that they will go down that route. A lot of what happens will depend on how Mr.Murdoch gets on with buying the controlling stake in Sky. It could mean an increase in the amount of content available (especially as he already owns the Fox network).

Hmm, that would be worth enquiring about - although as you can still receive catch up services via a laptop/tablet/phone etc then technically a licence fee would be payable....

As you say "technically" :bandit: but IIRC when you access iPlayer it only asks if you have a TV licence; it doen't check or verify whether you do or don't. Not that I'd condone using iPlayer without a licence. However, it's very easy to tick the wrong box on some websites

Check out the smug announcement on Sky, essentially saying that we're losing Discovery and Eurosport but we've got lots of great content....Sky Mix etc oh and subscription sports channels.

Sky actually did a few surveys recently for customers asking what channels you'd miss if they went.

They covered discovery, quest, Eurosport etc in one. Another also covered a number of kids channels like Nickelodeon, Disney etc. Probably they're next.

Funnily enough, I was using Sky for TV and Virginmedia for broadband for the best of both worlds. Reading about the loss of Discovery on Sky yesterday prompted me to consolidate my services with Virginmedia today, so I will have a new box to install on Wednesday:biggrin: and will spend considerably less on my services over the next 12 months.
