Sky TV losing discovery network

Funnily enough, I was using Sky for TV and Virginmedia for broadband for the best of both worlds. Reading about the loss of Discovery on Sky yesterday prompted me to consolidate my services with Virginmedia today, so I will have a new box to install on Wednesday:biggrin: and will spend considerably less on my services over the next 12 months.

I have the same setup...I'm going to wait a few months and see what plays out, maybe they might get on the same page and get a deal done.

I think a lot of people will resist renewing Sky subscriptions when they are due - the only reason we renewed this year is because they gave us a good discount. When it comes up for renewal I will probably switch to streaming/freeview via a smart TV (or plug in box) as it's possible to get just about everything that way now (mostly legally too)

Just spoke to Sky rep online and got given the company line plus a moan that Discovery is essentially badmouthing Sky boohoo. I told him that I don't give a toss about Sky vs Discovery, if they pay millions for football they can pay for Discovery. They're going to 'get back to me' I am not holding my breath. If I could wean SWMBO off Sky Atlantic I would try BT or Virgin even though Sky layout is good and their boxes do seem user friendly. Anybody else recommend BT ir Virgin?

Im only waiting for the chance to connect up a cheapy freesat box i got on a groupon, see how that pans outs re user friendly, and its recording ability, and then sky will be getting a letter cancelling the subscription and the bank will stopping the dd.. ringing to canel is a waste of time.. last time i did it cost nearly 20quid after spending 54 mins on hold

They have online chat now..... I used it a couple of weeks ago to "Enquire" about how much i could save if i cancelled my sports and movies.

As always i was friendly and chatty and said i was "under orders from the mrs to save some money". It took around 50 minutes rather than the 15 or so if it had been a phone call but i came away with a 40% discount on our TV for a year and then a follow-up call to the Fibre retentions got me a free Sky Q hub (worth £60) and another 10%+ discount on our fibre broadband for a year.

When using it always select the cancel sky kind of option rather than the change my package kind of option as the cancel option takes you to the retentions guys who have the power to give you a better deal.

The key here is how much you can get the combined package for. I've got the full house VM package + movies. I lose two channels (Sky Atlantic and ITV Encore). Possibly some other things, but I'm reducing cost by £500 a year, so I'll live with that. The 200Mb broadband should come in handy too. If Discovery does drop off Sky, I would have quit anyway. The way I read it, if I went for it yesterday, I would get better haggle room than going for it after Sky and Discovery part company.

I was considering going for a Kodi box and PVR setup, may still get a box to have a play with. Delve into the murky world of streaming.

I have a Samsung TV so that rules out Kodi. How much you paying for a full VM package?

Comes in at £73. Not as good as new customer deal, but acceptable. How come Kodi is ruled out by Samsung TV?

Think a similar package here in Ireland is about 120 euro. Kodi needs android to work and Samsung uses its own software :(

Will a separate Kodi box not work? Just plug it in via HDMI cable?

From reading some forums you can run it off a android tablet to a Samsung tv but its a bit complicated to get it to work. I'm not really up on it and gave up when they started talking about jail breaking your tablet and stuff!

SKY and Discovery have made up.

Panics over.

Nothing to see here...

Oh yes there is actually. Eurosport and Fast N Loud for a start :)

Should be able to run it off the tablet with screen mirroring enabled? (Assuming the tv have wifi) works fine like that with showbox.... so i hear.... it is battery intensive though... need to leave the tab plugged in to keep the battery level the same...
