ABS Light

Featured Replies

Hi can i ask please if i can do anything to clear the ABS light on the dash ? Skoda  Octavia 2003 .

This came on after i charged the battery up .

And i did wait for 30 mins after locking up the terminals .before i started the engine .

Thank you for looking .

Check the strip-fuses  in the battery box fuse holder first. Very common for the ABS one to crack. Simply opening the battery box to charge the battery may have finished it off.

Wino just where in the battery box will i find it .

The fuse panel is directly beneath the lid, it separates when you release the two catches on the sides of the lid:

Apologies for the lack of focus, it started peeing down with rain just as I was opening the bonnet so I was in a hurry!

Wino so sorry but i am in the rifght place .Just put the wrong car model in the post to start . It is a Fabia 2003 .And thank you Wino,  and Spulchrave,  thanks to you both i have located the fuses in the battery box lid .I looked in there first but never investegated enough .All the fusable links look fine along with the normal fuses . But i have seen some place a way to reset the lights with the trip button on the speedo i did this just know .But no change .I think now its time to get the VAG1552 on it . This only came about after i removed the battery leads to charge it up .I waited 30 mins before starting it up . So do you think its the best thing to do .Thank you .

Have you driven it since the light came on? I recently changed a strut on my Polo, which involved unplugging the wheel sensor. Afterwards the ABS light came on and only went off after a short drive plus switching the engine off and back on again, then driving another yard or two. Temperamental these ABS ECUs.

Wino  the car is not mine .I am doing it for my friend whose hubby died last year .It sat on the drive for some time .Only done  50 miles from the last MOT . She gave it to her grandson to learn to drive  in , but it wanted an MOT .I charged the battery for her , and on refitting it i saw the ABS light on told her then it would fail, and it did ,

So now i need to get a mobile repair chap to do a check on the abs for her. To see if its a cheap  fix or not .The brakes feel ok i drove it to the garage and back it runs very nice .  .All the fuses i have looked at  are good .So other than removing the wheels to check if any rust is on the sensor ring , or if sensors are faulty i dont know .And as i have time to do my own W124 260E this weather , so i dont think i will be doing it .Thank you .I will see how we get on with the code reader next .I will let you know the out come

i'd be interested to see the outcome of this, I ve had a abs light go on my 52 plate fabia 1.9 and the cheapo code reader said front right sensor - i changed, and its not :( I was wondering if the bearing (which has recently been changed) has given up talking with the sensor, i've even changed and fitted another sensor, from a different motor factors/brand with no joy.

It's rather common to have trouble with ABS sensors after wheel bearings have been changed, if the bearing/hub has been pressed in incorrectly without the necessary Gen 2 tooling.  Who changed the bearing, a backstreet general-purpose garage?

Yep - and I know for certain that the proper Gen tooling wasn't used as it was a mate helping me out!

Thing is, it was fine for weeks after.

whats the proper name for the tool - maybe I have to get it stripped down and a new bearing put in ? Or is it just an alignment thing.

General comment for info - The Octy 1 has a very similar battery fuse holder to the Furbie 1.

Tony1234 - The issue will be that the new bearing has been distorted as it was pressed in. There is no cure other than another new bearing and use the right tool to fit it.

Thanks Ken - before I buy the bearing - prices range from 25-80 quid - any makes to avoid? I'm sure the cars too old for a genuine part!

Im going to have to buy a single size gen tool from fleabay as well I reckon once I've Sussed out the bearing diameter - I've had most of the brakes off for inspection, cleaned and replace the sensor a few times so I might as well have a go at the bearing!

Loving all all the advice on here !

Personal preferences for brand - SKF and Timken.

Is there a way to cancel the ABS light on the dash board

I was told to disconect the earth lead , turn key to positon  2  , leave it for 10 seconds  .Remove the key .And re connect the earth lead..   But i read that after connecting   the battery to wait 30 mins    Any one done this ?  As i said last week i am waiting for the mobile electric to check it and find out just what it . Thnks to all members that gave me all the information on this ABS light fault .

To -day  the auto electric  chap was searching about in the fuse box

He checked the strip fuses to find the one for ABS was loose .

After it was locked  up , the light is no longer showing .

This 2003  might be for sale, it wants jobs doing for MOT.

I dont think the owner will have them done ,as she said she no longer wants the problem selling  it .

A good buy for someone . I have 2 cars now and i dont want it

Thank you for your help.;

Hi All.

I changed my rear ABS sensor tonight on my Octavia mk 2. After the sensor was changed there was a small delay in the light going out and only went out when I moved a few yards. I then had to wait with the engine running for several minutes before moving off and this seemed to reset the system.

Before that I moved off too soon and both my ABS light and ESP light came on and stayed on until I stopped the engine.

I hope this helps.

Thank you but the problem was solved by locking up the nut that holds the abs fuse . We did try driving the car before hand and reset it also  but  it was still the same .

You want special treatment, why are you special?

This forum has a set of rules. It may be different to others, but that's not relevant.

  • Author

Wino not complaining ,and i dont want special treatment ..I am just saying i have never had to pay  before on any of our forums . But if you rules say i must ,then thats what i will do  My fault i should have looked in to the rules and regulations on selling .
