Bye bye Sky

Featured Replies

So I am cancelling my Sky subscription (moved over to Virgin). Only thing is that I have a large number of programs recorded on the Sky plus HD box. I believe that I will lose the ability to view many of them once I leave Sky. Question:

If I disconnect the box from the network / phone line / satellite dish, will I then be able to continue to view the recorded material?

Otherwise, it will be spend the next month transferring programs to DVD.

Watching with interest but guessing that you'll be having a busy month.

When you cancel your Sky account, Sky will want to fire the kill switch on your viewing card. If you're disconnected from the dish, phone and wireless network prior to calling them and initiating the switch-off, you should (in theory) be able to watch your recorded media for a short time. Obviously if there's no way they can get a signal to your kit they can't disable it.

There might well be watchdog running on the boxes these days, which means if it hasn't seen a satellite signal for some time it'll refuse to do anything until it's reconnected, which is why I say that you'll be able to view the recorded data for a short time. That short time might be 24 hours or 24 days...

Oh how i miss the old analogue days...

when after the "kill" signal a sky card would work again after a couple of days in the freezer and a rub under yer armpit.

mustve worked a dozen times over the course of about 15months until they issued replacement cards to currebt subscribers, chamging the incription key..

emoti failure..

However, when you only had 5 English Sky channels, you also got the late night German/Italian ones that showed Colpo Grosso / Tutti Frutti.

You didn't need to speak the language to see what was going on :tongueout:.

Lucky you- at one time we had one ,depending on which way the wind blew, or how leaky the cable system was at the time. Dependant on the radiation, a decent signal was had by quite a few. As for radio- reception from Caroline was far better than from any of the EBC stations broadcasting in Scotland.
