Wipers stopped but motor working

Featured Replies

Hi,

Fairly new to Octavia VRS MK1 ownership and loving it. Last night pulled on to the driveway and turned the engine off without turning the wipers off. Got out and realised I hadn't turned my wheels (we have a steep-ish driveway onto a main road so always been over-cautious). Still with the door open, I started the engine, turned the wheel and noticed wipers were still mid-screen. Put the stalk to off, but nothing. Can here the motor going at the appropriate speed for the stalk position but no movement in the wipers at all.

Linkage is first thought, relay second but surely the motor wouldn't work accurately to the stalk's command if it were the relay (or at all if the fuse)...

Does the Octavia 1 have a shut off for the wipers when the driver's door is opened? If so, could I have damaged something by re-starting the car with the door open and the wipers set to on (and then fiddling with the stalk?) That seems unlikely to me, but it's just odd it happened at that moment. Any help much appreciated, it's pee'ing down for the next few days and I'm miles from the nearest garage

Cheers - Rich

I would think that the motor securing nut onto the linkage has come loose and allowing the shaft to turn inside the linkage. Failing that then would think the linkage is fubar if you can hear the motor operating.

Thanks KentPhil. Is the motor securing nut easy to get to and check once I have the black plastic cover off that runs under the windscreen?

it could be one of the spindles binding in its housing which has corroded  easy to sort once of the car emmery and grease       recently had the same with a 13 year old SEAT     not that common as the one before that was a'71 Morris Marina

Getting access to both the motor and the linkage is fairly easy. I had the linkage go on my old Mk1, meant I could only have one windscreen wiper working. Very unhelpful. Replacing either is pretty easy.
