1.9 tdi dsg mpg problem

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have recently bought 2006 Octavia 1.9 tdi (105) DSG and im not sure but i think the mpg is way too low.

im driving 64 miles everyday to work and back which is 60 miles on motorway and rest 4 on dual carrieageway.

Im driving 70 - 75mph max and not flooring it whatsoever.

i have checked the computer and i get 45.1mpg on average which i thought is wrong so i put a full tank right to the top and drove to work and back and refueled again round the corner from my house and i have put 6.67L of diesel to fill to the lid again, i have used calculator and its 46.3mpg covered 68 miles. thats around £1 every 10 Miles driven.

I think its not how it should be i reckon what others say i should do around 52mpg on motorway and around 40mpg in town.

i do around 32mpg in town.

I have changed Oil,Oil Filter and Air Filter , Redex and also changed the DSG oil and filter but doesnt seem it helped.

I had it on the diagnostics and only 2 faults came up

one was Glow plug faulty on 1st cylinder

two was oil level sensor faulty but no light on dashboard.

rear tyres are winter tyres and all 4 has correct pressure,

engine wise the car runs perfect.

i was thinking of buying mass air flow sensor but i dont want to spend for something thats not going to help and i think if it would be faulty the diagnostics would say it.

Anyone has a clue what i could do to help improve the mpg ?

thank you in advance :)

Welcome.

Your maths are off or mine are.

46.5 mpg over the 68 miles i think.   & an ickle more than £1 in 10 miles if you are paying 119 pence a litre (£5.40 a gallon)

Looks like quite a good mpg if you are not keeping it to 70mph with a 105bhp.

As to 40mpg in town that would have to be driving through a town with an already up to temperature engine surely.

hi, sorry i meant 1l to 10 miles driven,

that would be nice doing 40mpg in town but i dont even when the engine is warm.

6.67l isn't enough to get an accurate measure of fuel consumption due to variations in fill level etc.

Ideally you want to record the milage you get from three or more full tanks to start getting a better idea.

I would expect my 105 to read circa 60mpg on the Maxidot, with that kind of journey.

I do accelerate reasonably gently rather than quickly, and read traffic up ahead, easing off the accelerator rather than having to brake. This includes approaching traffic lights.

I cannot advise on your seemingly low mpg read, though.

It does seem on the low side. Check each wheel for heat after a run. Don't touch the disks! I had a similar issue when my OSF caliper was binding. MPG went right down. Heat from the wheel was quite noticeable.

And it seems to be a common problem, too.

It was mentioned that some have rubber (concertina style) covers on the caliper pins, but mine do not, and neither do the replacements pins come with them on the new rubbers.

thanks everyone for trying to help me.

i will check on the wheels if they get hot.

i have noticed when im driving at constant speed even with cruise on on straight road the instant mpg is going mad like 55mpg and then 35mpg and so on. jumps up and down quite rapidly.

Could be many things like

Sticky brakes

Wheel aligtment

Timing

Mass air flow sensor

Worn injectors or not set properly

EGR

Boost leak

Coolant and fuel temp sensor (or thermostat)

I would start with checking the timing and brakes

Start with Brims to Brims because that is free other than the fuel.

?

Why are there winter tyres on the rear just to use them up,

and does the Mileometer read accurately the miles covered when checked with GPS / Sat Nav?

  • Author

just checked after driving 30 miles and alloys are stone cold.

the last cambelt change was done by skoda dealer so i doubt they would mess it up.

coolant and temp seems all ok.

coolant and temp sensor would show error in diagnostics if it would be faulty right ?

I run a 56 plate Occy , I reckon you are getting mpg you should expect, it takes about 100 miles before I see mid 50's on the computer, on a long drive by the end, I have noticed high end 50's to 60 mpg, I think it's running to spec.

Have had car nearly 10 years ,overall mph is 50 ,with more town driving than open road, just coming up to 86 k, I am not disappointed with this.fairly happy actually.

1.9pd 105 bhp.

Bought new maf sensor.

Went on a motorway run today doing 75mph all the time on cruise.

Avg 42.9 mpg.

Done 114.7 miles

Quater tank gone

I had one little bar on fuel gauge down when i left.

This is only motorway miles. My house is 1 mile from the house.

At what revs do you change gear?????......Gives us an indication of your driving style.

1/4 tank did 115 miles so full tank similar driving should do circa 460 miles. Not good really, and I always think the first quarter of the tank seems bigger than the last quarter, Lol.

And are you sure yours is an elegance???? I ask as mine (55 plate) is just older than yours, but has the full height maxidot. Curious!

When it seems that my mpg is not what I think it should be I give it an Italian tune up  I do this about every 6 weeks with a shot of Archoil

Maxi dot is an option in Elegance spec.

Maybe found a solution.

When im standstill and rev it it has a weird dull sound and looks like i have an air leak from intercooler area.

I have checked under the bonnet and checked the pipes underneath but cant see any oil spots.

Also when i drive hard or rev it it doesnt smoke only a little and white. Ive had few diesels and they all smoke black when booted.

But i hear turbo working and no faults showing on diag.

Usually with an air leak you will get black smoke as the mixture is fuel rich.

Yeah but mine isnt black at all. Pure white

Mine is a manual but I get much more mpg than that. I have an EGR insufficient flow fault (replacement on its way) causing a MEL light on my dash and even with winter fuel I'm getting 70mpg on the dash which equates to about 63mpg in real life. Signature shows current average mpg over 15,000+ miles. Had a bad few returns due to a siezed rear caliper but once fixed was up to 83mpg (during the summer) on the dash with an all time best real mpg of just over 71mpg (Shell V Power summer fuel, front TP 36psi, rear 40psi, Goodyear efficient grip tyres). I do 90% motorway driving with most journeys being no less than 160 miles with about 60kg in the boot.

With my style of driving, when I give it a spirited drive I get thick black smoke. My pursuit of the Max mpg I can get out of it is probably the cause of the EGR fault and the black smoke. Normal driving I change gear very early and exploit the torque to give reasonable acceleration. When I don't care about MPG then I can still average, real world around 60mpg in the summer (55 in the winter) per tank. Maybe my point is that your driving style can have a huge impact on fuel consumption. With a DSG box I would expect a little less.

Average tank full gives well over 700 miles in the real world and depending how I drive, over 800 miles (I have had over 1000 mile range on the dash but didn't get it obviously).

All this relates to a 1.9PD 105 BJB engine with 5 speed manual. Also had the 'dreaded' police syren sound from the turbo for at least 100,000 miles.

So according to our signatures we are getting very similar mpg although my police siren noise is more of a whine at the mo

Ok its not intercooler. I have checked cambelt and it was replaced last year by skoda dealership and they set the torsion wrong. It was showing -1.47

Ive set it up to 0.49 and i can feel and see the difference. Only problem I have now is the idle fuel consumpsion which is at 1.0 mostly jumping 0.8-1.0

Before i started it was at 0.8

Should it be at 0.4 ?

Keep in mind mine is dsg so i dont know if it makes a difference

Change values

DSG could very well make a difference to idle fuel consumption as the pump is driven inside the box at all times whether a gear is engaged.

I recently sold my Octavia 1.9 DSG but did about 40k miles in it.

My long term average over those 40k miles was around 47mpg which is bang on the book figure for this car. This was mainly short trips through the week either on A roads or in town then longer runs on a weekend and holidays to Germany etc.

Your figures do seem a little low.

My last trip to Germany in it saw decent economy. York to Dover was the first leg of the trip and I got this (trip computer had been adjusted and was accurate):

20150919_183602_zps0hck9ej3.jpg

Which was estimating a very good range:

20150919_183554_zpsgxe0d2df.jpg

I did 677 miles by the time I filled up in Germany as we were generally cruising at 100mph on the Autobahn where allowed but sticking to other limits.

  • Author

677 miles ?

Yay that beautiful i just did 415 motorway miles from full to empty cruise on 75.

Well i moved the torsion to 0.49. It improved by around 4mpg but the starting is rubbish when hot like the engine would jump out.

Do you reckon whoever changed the cambelt could miss the timing by one tooth ?
