1.9 tdi dsg mpg problem

Featured Replies

Yes. And the trip computer was still showing 30 miles left. York to Dover, Dunkirk to Dusseldorf then Dusseldorf to the Mosel.

Don't think I ever got so few miles on a long run on mine. Even when I had the bike rack on the roof with two bikes I could get 400 miles from a tank.

It is possible that they could have set the timing wrong. It's not unheard of.

There is also some adjustment for timing on the pulley:

  • Mine is a manual but I get much more mpg than that. I have an EGR insufficient flow fault (replacement on its way) causing a MEL light on my dash and even with winter fuel I'm getting 70mpg on the das

  • It does seem on the low side. Check each wheel for heat after a run. Don't touch the disks! I had a similar issue when my OSF caliper was binding. MPG went right down. Heat from the wheel was quite no

Ok. Just looked at the cambelt and it was out by one teeth.

Sorted that out.

In town if i drive like granny i get 42mpg on avg.

from full ive driven 50 miles exactly and went to put full again and it costed me £6 around 5.5l of diesel.

For town thats great.

Well the bad bit.

Motorway. Still the same.

As soon as i go over 60mph and cruise on long road leveled my avg is 35-38mpg. Thats just touching the pedal.

So now town driving is fabolous

but motorway driving is bad.

Ive even borrowed maf from my friend who has same engine and his maf works fine. He does 60mpg.

Anyone got a clue what it could be ?

I think it's been said already but it's no good estimating average mpg over say 50 miles especially if that's a couple or more journey's

at this time of year my 13 mile journey to work can show between 52 and 59 mpg that's on the same route at the same time there and back, in the summer I expect to average in excess of 58 upto 64 mpg. on a decent run 140 miles plus I usually average 60 mpg plus ' keeping up ' with motorway traffic :wondering: should I strive for economy by keeping to say 60 mph I can nudge 70 mpg one day I'll do a check solely on a decent motorway trip I'd guess 70 - 80 mpg ?? @ 60 mph

I know but i doubt you do 450miles on a full tank and yes ive refuelled 3 times and its same all the time. Thats  95% motorway the rest 5 is dual carr.

Something definitely not right there.

You should be managing more than 450 miles a tank with almost all motorway.

Even when I've been to Germany doing 100mph+ on the Autobahn I've managed more than that. And even when I had 2 bikes on the roof managed about 450-500 miles.

And I once tried driving at 60mph to Manchester and back about 150 miles round trip and managed this:

I'm wondering if it might help for you to record a video of the engine sound and rev it a little and while driving if possible. You mentioned before about a sound when revved and some smoke.

Well you could do me a favour as you have dsg

drive 70mph and take a screenie of rpm. Coz mine is just under 25 and i believe it should be on 20.

Takecare

I don't have this car any longer but from memory 70mph was around 2500rpm. Maybe slightly lower.

They're not as high geared as you would think. I always felt 6th should have been a little longer.

My previous Seat Cordoba PD130 6 speed manual would be at less than 2000rpm at 70mph.

My Saab won't even shift into 6th unless you're doing at least 55mph and even then only on a level road with light throttle. 70mph in that is around 2000rpm.

I seem to remember the DSG would be in 6th by 45 or 50mph.

  • Author

Right. I have decat the car

removed the intake manifold cleaned it. Put a new seals everywhere.

Still the same

the last thing i will check tomorrow is the leak test on intercooler.

Yeah thats about right.

Sweet thank you mate

Right

i have changed the intercooler as i done a leak test and there was a slight leak in the old one.

Still no luck.

42mpg max @ 70mph on cruize

450 miles on full tank

decided it might be winter tyres so bought brand new 2016 octavia 16" alloys with new michellin tyres (from greenline version)

still the same.

In town or up to 60mph except motorway i get decent 45mpg but motorway is bad.

I have decided to run on motorway for one hour and town driving without turning the engine off and plugged it on diagnostics and took some readings out so im attaching screenshots

all the screenshots were taken while idle and everything off like climate and lights.

Don't you think the temp values are a bit low? 60 & 76C? I'd expect more like 90+ after M-Way and town driving. Not sure what those values are from? Maybe Fuel and Coolant?

  • Author

Yes its fuel and coolant temp

i will be removing the turbo tomorrow and clean everything i think the car isnt giving enough boost as its not really putting me into the seat when i floor it and no smoke whatsoever and thats strange. Every diesel should puff some smoke when accelerated hard.

Because its strange it town or a roads up to 50-60 mph i get excellent mpg but on motorway its crap. On straight road at 70mph it reads 36-38mpg instant nearly whole time. Might have open vanes.

I was going ask how it was on full throttle.

Although it's only 105bhp you should still get a decent punch from it with peak torque around 2000rpm.

Mine never really produced any noticeable smoke. The only time I could see any smoke was at night in the headlights of following cars but only if using a bit more throttle. Even then it wasn't like thick smoke just noticeable in the air. On light throttle and taking it steady I couldn't see any.

Can your reader do boost logging? Would be interesting to log the actual vs requested boost and see if they match.

im getting ****ed of with this car now.

When i tested it 1sttime the car was like a dream. Pulled home. Uploaded the pictures. Went to pick my friend up went on motorway and the car is same again. Feels like im towing someone. From 70 to 90 takes forever. Went of the motorway thru normal traffic car seemed like im towing. Stopped at traffic lights. Booted it and its boosting like on the test run.

I have taken screenshow while doing 70 "towing a lorry"

first one is doing 70

the second one is from 70 flooring it to max.

Any clues ?

That really sounds like classic sticking turbo veins.

Mr muscle can work really well, but it's not perfect all the time.

Shouldnt the car go into limp mode ?

yeah ive only done it thru exhaust side i didnt dissasemble the turbo. Might do on a weekend and give it a proper clean

just ordered new temp sensors and thermostat.

is the fuel temp same as the coolant sensor ?

as i have ordered 2 of the coolant temp sensor 2 pin.

gsf doesnt seem to sell fuel temp sensor.

PS- I'd disconnect battery overnight. It will help clear ECU and then it will 'relearn' the engine parameters. It 'might' help. It's also free.

  • Author

Right i give up. Time to sell the car. Cant afford to put £65 worth of diesel every 5 days.

Ive changed fuel and coolant sensors

thermostat

cleaned the turbo properly and even used wynns turbo cleaner after assembly.

The car is like a devil now and in town i can reach easy 40mpg

motorway. Same old crap

straight road 70 and its showing 36mpg.

Total run 44mpg

and cant squeeze even 1mpg more.

Oh and on top of it. Changed the coolant sensor and the light came on and flashing.

Checked diagnostics and its showing coolant temp sensor possitive .......

checked temp and its showing 90-94 c when on normal running temp.

  • Author

Right after another run and flashing water i managed to squeeze 49mpg on 32 mile run where 10 was city.

Apparently i have no heating in the car. Whole way stone cold blowing so i froze up. Temp to normal 90c

anyone have a clue ?

Did you fit a genuine VAG coolant sensor? It was a common problem for eb*y non VAG sensors to fail on the 1.9 Mk1 Octy and you may not know it as it is actually two sensors in one package - one for the display and one for the ECU. I assume it will be similar on your engine but I don't know for sure.

Be cheeky. Go to a local dealer with a similar spec car. Ask for an extended test drive. Compare shown mpg and the 'feel' you get from the car to yours. It might help pinpoint any issues you might not have noticed.
