Headlight washers activtion

Featured Replies

I've found that when my headlights are on, every time I activate the screen wash, the lights wash each time too. Can it be coded so they only wash the lights say 1 in 10 activation's?

As per Andyvee

Headlight Washer Frequency

To extend the interval cycles that the headlight washers will activate to:-

  1. prevent the front of your clean car being sprayed, and

  2. to reduce the amount of screen wash usage.

  1. Go to [09] Central Electronics

  2. STG access permissions -> Function 16

  3. Enter access code 31347

  4. Go to adaptation channels (Function 10)

  5. Select channel 1 - Select "Number of operations front windsceen wiper washer per SRA activation" (in German - Frontscheibenwischer Anzahl Betätigungen Frontwaschanlage pro SRA Aktivierung auswählen)

  6. Adjust value to preference (no of times you can operate the windscreen washer stalk before the headlight washer activate).

  7. Select channel 3, and adjust the activate time for folding the switch to enable headlight washers in the first place.

According to the manual it's supposed to wash the lights on the first windscreen washing since the car was started and every tenth washing of the windscreen after that.  That's how mine is working.  If your's is washing the lights every time then something is wrong.

Ah I was test this I thought the 10 would be a rolling count even if switching car off. Is there a way to stop it doing it on first start? Sometimes i just want a quick 1/4 second spray on windscreen without covering the car in screenwash at the front.

I've changed my washers behaviour so that I need to have activated the windscreen washer for 2 seconds before the headlight washer will activate. Easier to control that way IMO.

Is that a VCDS change?

I used OBDeleven, but yes, it is. Not something you can change in the infotainment anyway.

I asked my local dealer about this and they said there wasn't a software fix for it. :dull:

Their advice was that because it's on Auto lights most of the time it will wash them every 3 and the only way to fix it was to stick the side lights on just before I wash the windscreen :D

I've had mine programmed so they only wash if you hold the stalk for more than 2 seconds, They still was every 5 washes but again you need to hold the stalk for more than 2 seconds ( see my signature below )

Saves screen wash, simply clever

Erm at the risk of stating the obvious.....if you just want a quick spray on the screen turn off the lights! Simples

It definitely varies. I'm positive in the winter months it's a higher frequency than summer.

Errr thats cos its darker in the winter

If driving at night and just cleaned the car, I don't want to have to turn my lights off in order to clean the windscreen. Likewise I don't want to cover the front and sides of the car in screenwash.

If the screen is dirty enough to need cleaning then screen wash streaks along the front wings isn't going to make much difference.

Before starting the engine just flick the headlight switch over to '0', wash the screen, start the engine and flick the switch back to Auto.

I think I will get it coded so needs to more than 2 seconds. Seems a lot easier to control that way.

You didn't need to preface that with 'err' . It comes across as really really patronising. But thanks for enlightening me, that does make sense, specially as I forgot i have my lights set to come on when it rains, so in the daylight hours it operates too.
