6 Speed DSG noise?

Featured Replies

Having just got my car back after issues with the diff, I've now noticed a strange, but very obvious "wooo" type noise/ hum which seems to be linked to the gearbox - when N is selected then the noise seems to stop.

It's also very noticeable if the car is driven at around 30 mph with the driver's window open and you're driving alongside a wall so that the noise resonates back.

It's very annoying and can be heard pretty much all the time.

This is the first DSG car I've had. How much noise is expected from these gearboxes?

Thanks

Just to add - it almost sounds like wind noise (but clearly isn't)

My advice, having suffered serious DSG problems is to get it checked by a gearbox specialist. My box started making a noise, not as you described, more a rubbing sort of noise, which quickly escalated to a grinding and then a bearing failure.

I appreciate yours is likely in warranty but main dealers just don't have the skill/knowledge of DSG's to correctly diagnose in my experience. I suspect they'll fob you off as a new unit (they don't repair) will be around the £6k mark.

When mine was rebuilt it didn't make any noise, other than a bit of a clunk going in D.

It's a sort of howling noise.......

Im going back to the dealer tomorrow, fingers crossed it's 'normal'. I think they've got another 4x4 VRS down there still so I'm going to ask to compare mine with that.

Doesn't sound normal,  both my dsg boxes on the cars don't make any untoward noises.

This noise is constant, it's always there. As I said, it's similar to wind noise and can be heard even when you open the window.

How do you know its the gearbox?

Mine is a manual and makes a howling noise at low speeds, my guess its turbo related noise.

I would take the hit and get rid.

Biggest question - has the noise only started occurring after your "diff issue" ?

Regardless of what it might or might-not be, if your car is suddenly making a strange noise (cars should make normal vroom vroom and turbo-whistling noises - nothing else really) that wasn't there before, and it's recently been worked on by mechanics, then the connection can easily be made that something is amiss.

Take it back to get looked at again.

There are a multitude of things that it COULD be.... wheel bearings, DSG, brake pads sticking, low oil, turbo failure, something playing on your stereo that you don't realise, etc, etc.......

Important thing is, don't let yourself be deflected away by the service agents as there being "nothing wrong" or "it's normal noise" ... because there clearly is/it clearly isn't.

The key part for me is " when N is selected then the noise seems to stop. " I'd say that rules out most things other than DSG related issues.

As said above I wouldn't accept them saying it's normal etc. Taking a similar model out is a good shout and if they're in the car with you and it doesn't make the same noise then they haven't really got much of an argument.

Look like another 4x4? This noise you describe seems to be a feature on some 4x4 cars, in fact, most of them.

This is true, bmw xdrive cars do sound diffrent than rear drive.

The thing is most people are would be reluctant  to go back after thay have done major work when the outcome is there is no problem, even if its skodas fault, by misdiagnosing the problem . This work will be on there system, even if you take it to another garage, not that it should matter a jot.

Have a 4x4 Scout, no noise from drive at all. Sounds just like my previous VRS DSG . Might be a slighty noiser when cruising 80 + with seats down but put that down to acoustics of estate

Resurrection - traded in my Octavia VRS 4x4 over the weekend for a brand new one, same - VRS 4x4. This car makes EXACTLY the same noises that the last one did, whines when accelerating from 65-75 and at other speeds in between.

My older front wheel drive VRS was silent!

presumably it’s unheard of to buy two faulty cars in the space of 18 months (one being brand new).

I’m presuming it’s a characteristic of the car!

Seems unlikely, hope you didn't swap it because of "that" issue though!

I discovered my rear droning under coasting was a feature of the original contisport contact tyres. I have winters (well 4-seasons) on now and the noises around 60-80mph have gone

Well I have the DSG6 and the same haldex and so far I have heard nothing I would attribute to the drive or gearbox. As it is a quieter engine I would probably hear any noises more. The car is pretty quiet given the Skoda level of soundproofing.

As suggested above, tyres can cause a huge problem, but that noise is speed dependant and normally easy to spot.

One thought (as it is a VRS) is it that soundakator? Having neither had or have one I don't know what they sound like. Glad I don't have one TBH

Or it maybe a combination of noises that add to one another at certain points
