Engine problem

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I have an issue with my 2010 tsi vrs. On idling I can hear a tapping and knocking noise from the engine. If I open the bonnet I can see the engine "rocking" which is making the knocking noise. When driving with light throttle the car is quite jerky and seems to be exaggerated with these cold temperatures.

Performance of the car seems fine. Engine sounds and feels smooth when excelerating hard.

The engine rocking has been happening for a while, with no lights on dash. I thought it was to do with the p2015 issue, but I've had the inlet replaced by a specialist recently and it's not made a difference.

My thoughts it it could be tensioner or long shot of flywheel...

thanks for any help!

How fast is the tapping, is it regular or does it only happen when the engine revs or load is applied?

All engines rock, they're mounted via rubber to the chassis to prevent engine vibrations being transferred to the passenger cabin, but if the rubber degrades you can get metal on metal contact which causes a noise

If you think it's the tensioner you could probably have a decent stab at locating the source of the noise by placing the metal end on the timing cover and your ear against the other, it'll be obvious if the noise is coming from the area where you're touching

Tapping seems to be with the engine revs, but doesn't happen all the time and doesn't seem to happen under load.

The vibration can be felt in the cabin when idling. Driving is fine. I didn't think of the mounts, can the rubber degrade been seen in situ? Would this be a reason for being jerky under light throttle?

Sounds possibly camchain related then, imagine the kind of noise a light chain moving quickly would make if it were a little loose, if it sounds like that it could well be

One thing to be aware of is that the TSI engine is direct injection like a Diesel, so some typically Diesely "clickaty clack" injector noise is to be expected

I've not looked into the engine mounts on an Octavia so can't say if they can be checked in situ or not, I've not read on here about it being an issue and I'd be surprised unless yours has done ridiculous miles?

Light throttle jerkiness can be anything in the transmission and is called transmission shunt, the engine will move a little but it should be controlled.  It can (though rarely) be items such as a loose driveshaft (tinkling coming from one wheel) or other worn out parts in the drivetrain, but again, these aren't known issues as far as I'm aware and I wouldn't start looking for them unless your car has had a hard life...

My 2007 RS has done 125k *kilometres* and there's a noticeable, if not excessive, degree of shunt in the transmission in 1st and 2nd gear

If you can maybe take a video of the noise, and post it on here via Youtube or something, either myself or one of the proper knowledgeable folks would be able to ID it pretty sharpish :)

BTW, where is Wiltshire are you?  Before we moved to Southampton then Croatia, we used to live in Melksham :)

If it's transferring to the cabin is be looking at both of the lower engine mounts on the sun frame and the dogbone mount it attaches too.

I had cabin vibration and the top mount of the two had cracked.

What part of Wiltshire are you in? Anywhere near Bradford on Avon/Bath? I can recommend a couple of excellent garages if you do.

I have a 2011 Tsi vRS. There is a very noticeable tapping from the injectors which cycles in and out which is very noticeable when the bonnet is up.  It is common accross all the family engines, i've heard an Audi Q5 with the 2.0tsi and it was identical as well.

If it is more of a rattle esp on start up I'd suspect timing chain tension. If that was worrying you I'd get it checked ASAP. Sometimes there is a short warning, sometimes none noticed before......crunch time.

Vibrations to me sound like an intermittent miss or a DMF problem but as others have pointed out, some vibration is to be expected that is why the engine mounts are flexible, one could be failed making it more noticeable.

It's a TSi. Presume the worst!! Apologies but I've read right through the sticky at the top of the Octavia section. It's actually put me off buying a F/L Octavia.
