Gearbox Input shaft seal replacement

Featured Replies

Anyone know how to remove the input shaft seal from an 02T gearbox?

I have a second hand box waiting to go in the car but would like to change this seal

Can it be done without splitting the gearbox?

Enthusiastic gouge with screwdriver worked for me. Took a bit of effort and persisting. Prize outward from shaft, I  think. I've got a tube of the special radial seal grease if you want a little. Same goes for the spline grease.

Thanks wino, if i had know you had done this I would have asked on my other thread lol

I am just about to order the seal its only £4 so i thought i might as well do it whilst the box is off

If you do have some of the grease that would be great PM me and I will arrange to pay postage etc

Pro tip: Fire a couple of self tappers into the steel backing at 3 and 9 o'clock and lever it out with these using a claw hammer, bit at a time until the seal pops out.

Managed to lever it out using a screwdriver in the end.

Is the radial seal grease the same stuff as castrol red rubber grease?

Well done. It's a bit small for the self-tappers/claw hammer approach I think.

Nope. For starters it's blue. It goes by the part number G 052 128 A1, it wasn't massively expensive, but you need a tiny amount for that seal, so you may as well have some of my leftovers.

I haven't got time to look through all the info just now, but at first glance this blue stuff is mainly for the drive flange seals at the diff.  Might not be required at the input shaft seal.  See what you can dig up info-wise.

I cant find alot about the sealant online other than its use on the flanges.

I reckon it should be ok without it, i'll just use some grease or oil to seat the seal properly and hope it doesn't leak.

On another subject,

Ive found that there's a tiny amount of lateral play in the input shaft (less than 0.5mm side to side/up down total i would say) however no play at all longitudinally so I think that's acceptable.

There is also a tiny amount of backlash when you rotate the input shaft until the driveshaft flanges turn. I don't know much about the tolerances for gearboxes but I'm assuming its just the gaps between the teeth and nothing to be concerned about.

  Fair play. PM me a delivery address if you'd like a little of the spline grease though. I think it may just be moly grease dressed up in VW packaging though.  I think there's meant to be a very light amount on the input shaft spline, some on the pivot bolt of the release lever, some on the point that the slave cylinder plunger hits at t'other end of same, and a little on the release bearing where it contacts the 'fingers' of the clutch housing.

I have no idea about play/backlash, but I suspect you'll be fine.

Edit: Do you have plans for the old box? Take it apart and see what's failed?

Thanks, i'm going to pick up a container of moly grease tomorrow when i get the clutch.

Think for the amount im going to need it wont matter if its not the VW specific stuff, so i should be ok

Plan is to dissemble the old box and find out what's happened, im sure its a selector issue but may be worn syncros.

Don't know of anywhere which would be interested in buying an old gearbox for recon maybe. If not I'll just keep it could be useful for spares.

If you do take it apart, please take some photos and put your findings on here. :)

I think I've seen a youtube video of one being professionally stripped and refurbed, which may help you if you do give it a go.

Thats a good idea, I'm really intrigued to know what has failed as i can't really work it out.

Will make sure i take plenty of pictures and add them to a post.

If its something obvious & cheap enough I may repair it and keep as a spare box.
