GOODBYE TO THE BEAST

Featured Replies

Well after 35 months of ownership of my VRS 2.0 Litre petrol with 6600 Miles on the clock it has finally gone. My new car is a Nissan Qashqai 1.6 Litre petrol. Overall I did not loose any money on the Skoda in fact I got £2280 in a trade in over its GFV which sounded ok to me as all I hear about on this forum from other VRS owners is them VT their Skoda as its worth less than the GFV. Any way I wish to post the good and bad experiences of my ownership of the Skoda so hear they are:-

THE GOOD:-

1 - I cannot fault the power of this car and it was more than enough for what I need it to be.

2 - The sunroof I choose is a good option and is well worth having for those elusive sunny days.

3 - Boot space is massive.

4 - Rear passenger space is also very good.

5 - The heated seats are also a good option.

6 - Park assist is ok but mainly got it for the front sensors and never used the park assist to park the car since owing it.

THE BAD:-

1 - 6 new spoilers in 3 years due to paint blistering/bubbles.(totally hacked me off).

2 - I tended to drive it like a man possessed and felt like a ned at times.

3 - Nearly crashed the car twice showing off to myself.

4- Bolero gremlins a couple of times with the screen disappearing and then coming back on again when switching on/off the ignition.

5 - SD car gremlins sometime the car would not recognise the SD card in the slot, tended to do this is cold weather now and again.

6 - The sound generator which I hardly ever used I would guess would begin to rattle as I did hear this once or twice when I pushed the car hard in VRS mode.

7 - Fuel consumption no matter what people say is around 17% less than what Skoda claim, 27-28mpg around town and 41-42 on a long motorway journey.

OH & THE UGLY

I wonder how many of the VRS owners on hear can claim to be real Skoda enthusiasts?

In my early years in the 1980 - 1990 I once owned a Skoda Estelle which gave me no trouble for several years of ownership, save a new clutch cable, no one would buy them in those days but I did and was glad I did. Good bye for now to all on this forum I have enjoyed reading the posts and thoughts of others and will keep an eye on the forum but doubt I will ever return as a VRS owner.

You did 6600 miles in 35 months?! I'd be running something with a much lower mpg and more cylinders if I was in that position! Agreed that the mpg is around what you have said rather than what Skoda says. It would be nice if I could better low to mid 40s on the motorway but rarely do unless I'm consciously trying to be economical.

I'm not sure how you can claim to have not lost any money overall on the Skoda though? Surely you didn't sell it for the same amount or more than what you paid 35 months ago?!

I'm stunned if you can / want / need to do only 6,600 miles in 35 months.

188 miles per month. Yikes.

6 New spoilers !  Does that include the original and 5 more or were 7 used to get to the 35 months.

Where they supplying them already painted or was Peters & Lee doing the painting and fitting?

For his/her monthly repayments it would have been cheaper to use a taxi.

Cracking reply as ever . Chuckled at Peters and Lee haven't heard of them for years ... Welcome home ..

My wife drives a qashqai (63eg)and I hate it, like sailing a boat compared to the steering of the VRS plus she get 25MPG around town.

Hope the 6k miles were mostly long runs.

If it's all 5 miles to the paper shop every day, the engine will be knackered.

Simples.....ditch the cashcow and buy a 170bhp Yeti like ours - enjoy 40mpg and 0-60 in a smidge over 8 secs and have two VRS! But you can have so much more fun in postman pat's van cos no one knows you care!

Those miles lol 2200 per year.

I do a bit more than that now I have a mileage diet but still consider that mpg / fuel expenditure to be "leisurely" :D

I'd take a rotary engine at those kind of miles mate :D or a v8 6.0L .....etc etc.

I'd not beruling that out except for the fact the Octy ( and Fabia ) are so good in practice not just on paper, on insurance, on tax, on fuel etc,

less hassle to worry about too than a lot of cars, who wants to worry about getting scratches on far more rare or expensive exotica.

My main gripe is it could be a tiny bit more "premium" quality for the vRS monika and price.

Plus 2 + 3 are bonuses not drawbacks hehe, I doubt you will as much fun in a "cash cow" 1.6 :D (diseasel?).

Never mind my teasing good luck with it anyway and sorry to hear of such drawbacks.

I haven't had direct experience of 1,4 and 5,6 a tiny bit, for 2+3 you have to discipline yourself internally to try to be more mature.

I find it hard to drive like that all the time personally, its actually easier in the fabia vrs to be a lout as its lighter, feels more reactive/torqueier to me which I am just conscious how heavy and massive the octy is.

The octy could do with a bit of a diet actually :D

I THINK I am an enthuisiast by the way but may be you can help me :D Not owned or bought any different car since 2002, let me count that's  1 (1st the Fabia 1.4Mpi).... 2 (Fabia vRS tdi)..... 3 (wifes Fabia 1.2 htp), 4 (octavia 2.0 tsi mk3 vrs) ....... car purchases of which the first 2 were brand new and second 2 nearly new. Does that fully qualify as a Skoda nerd :) I still own 3 and the MPI I don't still gets seen regularly round these parts :)

what a load of rubbish, how did you work that out? his engine will have gone through the same amount of warm up cycles as anybody else's! so everyone else's engine will knackered too after 35 months! overall his engine won't last as many miles but time wise it will.

I bet his car still looked immaculate though with such low mileage and not battered to hell on the front end with chips! Skoda paint seems to chip so easily :(

I just meant that it wont be getting warmed up properly doing lots of shorts runs, whereas most engines get to do a lot more miles after a warm up, and get everything up to temp, get rid of all the condensation etc.

Its quite well known that lots of short runs degrades the oil very quickly, gets sludgy, and if not changed regularly, sludges up your engine and can cause wear.

2 - I tended to drive it like a man possessed and felt like a ned at times. - And you think a Qashqai will make you feel less neddy?

3 - Nearly crashed the car twice showing off to myself. - You probably deserve a Qashqai, or a Micra. If you cannot handle it - don't drive it:biggrin:.

I quite like the idea that the depreciation on a car shouldn't cost me any more than the fuel it burns. It doesn't always work, but it's in the right ballpark for me when I buy a nearly new car for less than £15k and keep it for 5-6 years (I do 14k miles/yr currently, it was a bit higher). We're talking 15p/mile type numbers.

At 2.2k miles/yr, assuming the PCP repayments were about £350/mth (a guess) the depreciation, even with the equity at the end, comes in at ~£1.50/mile.

:o

Who mentioned taxis being cheaper, it's not far off...

You gotta love cars man, I just couldn't justify that to myself.

Alternately, are we sure that 6,600 is not a typo? Loveman hasn't been back on since, maybe we're just in the lull before the correction?

Might of done that mileage, we needed a second car and I managed to find a 9 year old Subaru Imprezza with just over 21000 miles with full Subaru history, every bill, receipt and MOT. It was mint, the only bad thing was the alloys having the Subaru corrosion.

You did well to get any benefit at all from trading in your Octavia. I had to VT mine and it was handed back yesterday at the dealers in Glasgow and will soon be up for auction at BCA. So if anyone sees SF63 GZN, a 1.6TD Elegance Estate for sale in the near future don't be worried about buying it if the price is right as whilst not perfect with the wonky torsion beam rear suspension, it was actually a very reliable, comfortable car and is actually in very good condition with just under 29,000 miles on the clock!

The GFV for my low-mileage 2014 VRS TSI is £9800, but even Webuyanycar have offered £13,200 for it (after it being inspected). Not that I will give it to WBAC.

I think every owner will say good buy to Skoda as soon as they can afford more expensive car. But being 6.6 tall Octavia and Superb are awesome cars and have one thing many cars lack. Space for tall people, front and back seats! And plus 5. door massive booth!

Think many car brands should work on there models and bring up that space for 6.6 tall people.

I dont think its total rubbish, by doing low mileage and not heating the car up could potentialy cause issues, both petrol and deisel due to moisture. Ie not burning condensation of in the exhaust, not to mention the effects on the oil. I have bought cars that have done little milage and had to replace whole exhaust systems due to corrosion.

well he hasn't really said how long his journeys were, so does that mean every low mileage car is junk? agreed though doing a couple of miles each time doesn't get the car up to full temperature.. I've only done a few hundred miles this year in my vRS, but they have been decent 70 mile round trips, I bought a daily beater for work whilst I'm driving through a building site every day just so I can keep the Skoda mint, it will get used and enjoyed when my working environment improves! everybodies driving scenarios are different, doesn't mean the engine is wrecked!

Mark.

I love it how this post has generated so much interest. Thats why i love briskoda and still using it 12 years on. Amazing no response from Loveman . It would be funny if he realises he has missed a zero off and it should read 66,000 miles.

Yes only 6600 miles on the clock, 2 thirds of that mileage is town driving the rest motorway. The reason why the mileage is low is that I have the use of another 2 cars in our household. When I was buying the Beast I was going to buy it outright and keep the car for several years, the salesman persuaded me to take the 0% PCP over 3 years with the free servicing so I did. I was happy with the car up until I got the spoilers problems 7 months later and over the remaining ownership this plagued me as follows:-

1 - new spoiler put on and picked car up when raining, when I got home raining had stopped so checked spoiler and found pint bubbles on the underneath of spoiler.

2 - back to bodyshop who took spoiler off and put tape over the holes to prevent water getting into boot, bodyshop manager accepted full responsibility and informed me they would repaint the spoiler. Got phone call a few days later to be told the repainting failed and that they had to order another spoiler from the UK. Got a phone call agin a few days later to be told that the new spoiler had arrived but was damaged and that they had to order another from the Skoda factory with no ETA. I got Skoda customer services involved who eventually got me one and arrived at the bodyshop, was painted and I got a phone call to come and get it, looked at it and it appeared ok, this lasted a few weeks until a further bubble appeared in the corner of the spoiler.

3 - back again to the bodyshop for repair.

4 - bubble gone and after a few weeks bubble appeared in same place and paint now bleaching along spoiler edge where joins bodywork. Back to bodyshop.

5 - another new spoiler ordered and painted and left to dry naturally. This lasted for around 4 - 5 months the a big bubble appeared on the top of this spoiler. Back to bodyshop again and manager appeared dumbfounded as to why this was happening. I got Skoda customer services involved to ask for a spoiler to come from the factory painted the same colour as my car. Got told this is not possible as this part comes primed and has to be painted by the bodyshop. New spoiler arrived September/ October 2016 and this lasted so far without any blistering/ bubbling. All Skoda customer services could guarantee was that any repair carried out would be covered until the actual car warranty had expired, so after 3 years you are on your own but they and the garage would be sympathetic if this problem reappeared outwits warranty.

As as much as I loved the Beast I could not live with this, the bodyshop was an approved VW one, as another forum member posted an old Peters & Lee repairer (he must be old to remember them) I could just see the bodyshop manager saying WELCOME HOME when the spoiler gremlins appears again.

Thanks.

?

Do you care to share this body shops name so that it can be on the 'To be avoided list'. ?

A VW Approved Repairer, that is a total joke.

Which Dealership Group out of Scotlands rather wonderful selection was this you were dealing with,

Sir Arnolds, Parks, Ingrams, Western, or some other?

Cheers.

george

PS.

Maybe they should be called  'Robert the Bruce refinishers'.
