changing my boot lid

Featured Replies

Alright guys, at some point my car had a new boot from a scrap yard but all the bottom is chipped and started to bubble where they've dragged it on the floor, to be able to change the boot what tools would I need looking at the hinges I couldn't say I've used that sort of tool before

So leave the hinges attached to the boot lid, it's much easier to remove the nuts holding the hinges to the bodyshell.

thankyou for the advice but what tool would I need to take it off?

A 10mm socket if memory serves, you got basic hand tools?

I have yes, think I looked at the hinge and it was a torx but with more, thanks for the help.

You looked at one end of the hinge, not the other. It's a spline bit at one end, can't remember the size, undo the other end and stop making me repeat myself.

M8 spline/xzn bit by the looks of it, for the accessible fixings.  Looks like the headlining is in the way of the other hinge-body fixings, not sure how much of a faff that is to get out of the way.  If you do go for the spline bolts, make sure you tap the bit all the way into the bolt heads, the ones I looked at just now are very thickly paint covered so there could be a danger of stripping the heads if the tool isn't fully engaged.

I would have thought that the alignment would be done by hinge to body bolts rather than tailgate to hinge bolts though?

Also, not mentioned in the link I posted is the tailgate washer pipe which I presume needs removing too.

Well when i did mine it took a while adjusting the hinge to bootlid position as theres a slot for it to move up/down and side to side.

thanks for that, don't know what I'd do without you all on here!

No need to fiddle with the headlining unless you're replacing the aerial, nuts are accessible through the panel openings either side of the hinges, this is why it's easier to do this way because the hinges have welded studs which locate in the panel and the nuts can be spun on by hand preventing the boot lid collapsing, you use the gas struts to hold it up while you pop the hinges into place and spin the nuts on, then simply tighten the nuts until just pinching, shut the boot, and it finds it's own location.

I've done this myself, I'm not just guessing.
