2.0tdi 150ps won't tick over when cold

Featured Replies

Hi, All

As title, really - last few days my cold engine ticks over OK when I first start it and reverse out of the garage, but thereafter each time I come to a halt, it just cuts out – which is both annoying and also a bit worrying.

Once it gets up to temperature, of course, it's difficult to say if it's still cutting out or if it's simply the stop/start in operation. As an experiment I have pressed the stop/start over-ride button after a cold start and the motor then runs without cutting out whilst it's cold, and continues to do so once it's warmed up.

Temperatures and pressures are normal, no difference in engine note and performance is unchanged. I doubt it's a major issue, but I can't get to a dealers because I am on the road for the next four weeks, so I would appreciate any thoughts you might have on what's amiss.

Call Skoda Assist, get a replacement car till they fix it

Is the stop start symbol coming on when the engine "cuts out" when it's cold and are you having to restart it manually? Or does it re-start on its own?

It sounds completely normal to me. It is just StopStart doing what its supposed to do.

When the engine stops due to StopStart there is a small (A) symbol will appear on the Maxidot to inform you it stopping because of StopStart.

The engine will then restart if you put your foot on the clutch or automatically if e.g the climate system needs to engine for heating or cooling.

If you dont want the engine to stop, you can press the StopStart button to cancel StopStart which will illuminate the same symbol but with a \ through it.

This shows that the function is disabled.

Interesting point! It has done both - sometimes it restarts simply by depressing the clutch, on other occasions I have had to manually start it.

That's the problem. Stop/start is not supposed to operate until the engine has warmed up.

Start stop operates as soon as the basic conditions are met whether the engine is hot or not.

+1

As I understand it the following conditions prevent stop start and if not present then stop start will operate?

Notes for vehicles with a start-stop system
If a start-stop system is installed, the following abort conditions will deactivate the start-stop function:
t  The start-stop system has been switched off via the start-stop mode button.
t  The charge condition of the battery is insufficient to restart the engine (starting voltage prediction).
t  The defrost function is active.
t  The windscreen heater function is active.
t  The air conditioner system temperature set in the control element deviates by more than 8 °C from the actual temperature of the interior.
t  The engine speed is greater than 1200 rpm.
t  The alternator -C- is defective, i.e. belt broken.
t  Coolant temperature not within specifications of 25 °C - 100 °C.
t  Blower speed increase by more than 4 stages.

Stop start on my car doesn't normally cut in if cold on a cold day, but if it is reasonably warm (around 10 degrees C +), it will operate almost immediately!  Like the others said, check the display for the A icon.

Now I am confused. I've owned the car for a couple of years and in all that time the stop/start has not come into operation until the engine has warmed up a bit. That's why I posted my concern over the fact that it has suddenly started to "cut out" while the engine is still stone cold.

James and ords are saying that's normal - but rdb points out, as I thought, that the temp has to be between 25 and 100 for it to work.

Coolant temp of 25 degrees can be achieved within a matter minutes on a modern Diesel engine.

If the engine has stopped due to StopStart the automatic restart (by pressing the clutch) will be cancelled for several reasons:

e.g.

   - If you open the drivers door

   - Take off the drivers seat belt

   - Open the bonnet

   - etc

If the automatic restart is cancelled, this will be shown in the (A) symbol qith a \ through it & a message on the MaxiDot saying "Restart Manually".

If for whatever reason, you don't want the engine to stop, either don't take your foot off the clutch or press the StopStart switch.

There is a set of traffic lights less than two minutes drive from where I live. And so the Stop/Start frequently cuts in even when the engine is cold. As others have said, your car sounds quite normal.

Well, thank you to everyone who has taken time to respond to this thread.

The consensus is clearly that there is nothing unusual happening here, despite my continued misgivings, so I will go and find something else to worry about!

Basically as long as the StopStart (A) activates in the Maxidot when the engine stops, everything is fine.

If the engine stops without the (A) & you have to restart manually by turning the key/pressing the start button then you should get your dealer to look at it.
