Detachable towbar storage

Featured Replies

I'm getting a detachable towbar fitted to my vRS today.  This is probably a stupid question but is there a specific location to store it when detached?

My dad has had various BMWs for years and they have a bracket in the boot behind a trim panel that it clips into when not in use, does such a thing exist in the Skoda world?

On the Mk2 there was a cut out in the foam for the spare wheel kit. Depending on the make you just need to trim the foam to fit.

Didn't realise mine had a tow bar until I bought the car. Even the salesman wasn't aware.

But the short answer is in your garage (assuming you have one) I don't foresee an occasion when I will be out and suddenly need to tow something so only plan to attach it when I need it.

Cool, mine is a Witter detachable.  What is the OEM one?

Westfalia but not the same as you can buy as the neck shape and lock differs.

I went for the factory fitted detactable one and it, together with a few tools, fits inside the spare wheel.  There's a sort of plastic/polystyrene fitting inside the wheel to hold everything snug.

I believe mines a GDW Swan neck which looks identical to mk4gtiturbo's, fitted by A1 Towbars. Didn't come with a key (already fitted when I bought car second hand) and was quoted approx. £16 by A1 Towing for a replacement key. The guy(s) at replacementkeys answered my web query and delivered within 24hrs. Top service all for £6!

Do you have a detachable towbar for sale?

If you do, I might be interested.

I have one fitted to my car which will be going back in last day in August at the very latest. Mk4gtiturbo was obviously in a hurry and due to build times from order I can't be sure when the new one will arrive.

You do need it in the car because the tow bar covers the threaded hole you would screw the towing eye into if you car need to be pulled out of the mire backwards - oh all right - I admit it  - this in the manual - which I have read.

I'll get me coat

OK, I think I'll need one fitting before then.

Just over £400, all the other quotes I got were £600+ and if I wanted dedicated wiring it was £800+

Fitting you're own tow bar isn't that hard. The mechanical side is relatively easy and took me around half a day to do and that was taking my time. The electrics again not that hard until you get to the can bus and fuses. More fiddly than difficult made harder by having fat fingers. Again half a days work being careful. This will leave you with a working towbar but will require coding to get the full benefits such as alarm extension and disable rear fog and PDC when connected to trailer. It cost me £15 for a local guy with VCDS to do this and few other extras for me.

PF Jones will charge you around £290 for a Wesfalia detachable tow bar with dedicated electrics and coding say an extra £20 you will be quids in and know the job has been done right and all you need is the time to do it yourself.

I was going to buy the bits and fit it myself, the company who did this are the ones that my Skoda dealer use

If they are doing dedicated for £400 then go for it. I'm not a fan of bypass electrics as can bus isn't very tolerant and for the sake of the extra costs I would rather have peace of mind.
