Roofbar recommendations?

Featured Replies

That also crossed my mind. I just didn't know if there are any fitments somehow mounted inside the bar to which the feet attach? If not thern this might be a bit of a winner.

I'll attempt to dismantle one of them tonight. Thanks for your help.

What I have noticed on the superb there are no actual markings on the roof rail to suggest where to place the bars unlike my old  Peugeot 406 estate where they had tiny ^^ indicators. So is there a measurement you should place the bars because I have a box and bars from my old Peugeot the bars do fit but like I said I'm unsure of where to place them

I tend to judge the spacing based on the load I'm carrying. Something very long I'll put the bars as far apart from each other as I can to support it and minimise sagging at the ends. Shorter loads move them closer to each other. I don't recall seeing anything in the owner's manual about particular spacing so I doubt Skoda envision it being an issue.

Don't cut your bars down. I don't think the end caps will fit back on plus you are rendering your bars worthless if you need to sell on.

Wing bars are the best bars. I've had the black square and the aero oval ones. The wing bars are genuinely silent. If you couple with a good sleek box then you will not hear any wind resistance.

I have a spirit thule 780 box with wing bars and you don't notice it is on the roof when driving.

use common sense when spacing the bars apart. Further apart equals less strain on box mountings and roof rails and a little more stability.

I dismantled the volvo/thule bar last night. the end caps/feet slide in and out of the extruded section no problem and the bar can definitely be cut down. I appreciate they will no longer be valuable as volvo bars but they will fit the skoda. They're only really worth about £50 now anyway so I'm down £50 on resale (assuming they are worthless) but the new Thules would be £230 so I'm up £180 overall!

Reckon I'm going to give it a try :)

Use a guide to cut them to ensure a square cut, otherwise take them to local engineers and they'll soon cut them down for you.

Got the Volvo bars cut down (well one of them, the other fitted as was). Gave them a quick clean and fitted today. Quite pleased with how they look.

They look great - that's a win!

Thanks. Really plaeased with them. Not quite as low profile as the whispbar option but basically a set of Thule bars for no outlay (apparently Thule do make Volvo bars, makes sense what with them both being Swedish).

In the end I just ran tape around the bars to act as a guide and then used a hacksaw. Clean up with coarse wet and dry paper. Only took 30 mins or so inc fitting to the car.

What's useful here is that it would seem that you could buy a set of used Thule bars for a larger car and then cut them down as required. If you're looking for used Thule stuff then it might widen your options.

Cheers,

Nice work. Glad you could re-use them for nothing more than half an hours work.

and now you just have to transport something silly on the roof, like me, to test them.....

Extended range fuel tank?

A-hah! I think you have solved it. There's guys here in Ireland running their diesel trucks on reclaimed cooking oil.

Williamshatnerspants is obviously hitting KFC and asking for a ""Chicken bucket for the family and 600 litres of finger licking good juice for the Superb, if you please!".

Actually, we should tell the guy who was asking about replacing his current fuel tank with a 70 litre one from an Audi to check this out. 600 or so litre tank is even better. Simples and Simply Clever. KFC probably gives it to him for free - gotta be good to have the lovely smell of Southern Fried Chicken wafted all over Auckland. Its a win/win.

Looks like crap though. Probably a prototype.  :)

Thanks but I might get stuck under a low bridge. Plus refuelling would be a nightmare. Lol

You guys are brilliant.

This 1000 litre tank was sadly just for rainwater collection. I like the recycled cooking oil idea, but maybe for an older diesel. It'd be the best thing to come out of KFC!
