That link should work a lot better. Just click in X5 products...

Oh, yea and if you're interested in that you might also be interested in the trafcam gps based spped camera detector that works alonside the tomtom navigator and costs just 79 quid.

you can find out about that at:

http://www.trafcam.com/

Pretty good considering it includes the GPS receiver too... I can't figure out though if it's the wired or bluetooth version.

It's the wired version. But thats no bad thing considering all the reviews i've read on the bluetooth one showed problems with connection drop-out (as with nearly everything else thats bluetooth)

Ahh, just looked at the tomtom website. It's the wired version (red box) whereas the bluetooth version is in a (guess what!) blue box.

Damn fine price though - the tomtom website says it's

A map is a lot cheaper, but doesn't necessarily help when you miss the odd right hand turn, and you're leading a convoy through rural Wales.

Also, for traffic warnings, I just put the T.I on on the radio, and that's normally good enough for me. :D

(oh, and for route planning, it doesn't get much better than streetmap.co.uk)

Trafcam is a good addition, but I believe it incurs subscription charges. www.pocketgps.co.uk has review of add-on software for TomTom navigator 2 which will alert you speed-cameras (and other 'POI', Points of Interest), which cost less (most expensive being $27 US, cheapest is FREE) and use their weekly updated Speed Camera database, which is FREE of subscription charges (unlike Trafcam).

The free add-on for TomTom is CheckPOInt, and can be found here http://checkpoint.oabsoftware.nl :D

Like Snoop says 'I gots to do it :)'*

Novice Question

Can it be easily moved from car to car, we would like sat nav in both cars but dont see the point of buying 2

My experience is that they are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. They are normally woefully late, and many of them rely on road users actually ringing in to let them know what's going on. The only time I use it now is if I want to find out about a big problem that I already know about.

TrafficMaster is hard to beat. Very accurate. Needs more roadside sensors though. There are stretches of the A1 through Herts that are bereft of sensors and I have been caught in traffic jams before which were 'out of range'. Still better than the radio.

Stuart, I would have thought so - but of course it depends how you wire it in. If you just velcro (?) the bits in place, you can easily move them from car to car. But if you want a stealthier install, then it'll be better installed, but not as easily migrateable from car to car.

Up to how it's fitted really.

A push-bike is a lot cheaper that a car.

Not as much fun though!!!

Have you ever tried to read a map (or directions) while traveling in central London rush hour. Its no fun I can tell you!!!

In my opinoin anything that leaves you free to consentrate on the road instead of fumbling around with maps on your lap is a good thing. Oh and the TOMTOM is voice guided so you dont even need to look at the screen!!!

Now tell me you're not tempted

Tempted... :D - But can't afford it, not with what I've got planned soon. :(

A map and that website will have to do for now.

Oh, and when I get lost I normally pull over and get my bearings then start again, unless I'm at traffic lights or something. However, after looking at a map, I can normally mirror that image in my head, to where I'm driving...Maybe it's a slightly photographic memory (short term) - But once I know the rough distances and lefts/rights, I struggle to get lost even in the busiest of places.

However, I agree sat-nav would be a good fun and a nice ICE addition.

Rob.

ok ok, Rob.... :rolleyes::rofl:

It's different when I'm in a quiet area, and I'm concentrating on going as quick as poss, and not checking on directions. :D

Also, Jason, remember that on the paper variant, you don't get the locations of the yellow boxes :p

Sorry, just couldn't resist. Please forgive me

:D - Lucky I'm very thick skinned. I can't take offence to anything nowadays - Life's too short and if I got annoyed at everything, I'd probably die a lot sooner.

(besides, if anything, I'm just used to it now)

I bought the totalpda and tom tom, plus the euro map prior to departing for sunnier climes, and found it a great help, voice directions where good, and if you do take a wrong turning, it works out alternative route very quickly (you dont get the "take a u-turn and the next junction" routine), what did impress me was it took me from Santander to my home address in Lloret De Mar without a hitch, and highlighted all rest stops and petrol stations, all in all a good buy. Or is that Goodbye.

Haha - after being thoroughly ****ed off by my insurance company, and subsequently having to abandon the Jabba-ing of my car until next year, i just HAD to spend the money burning a big hole in my pocket, so i've just ordered one of the GPS systems from Dell. Yippee. I was thinking about it anyway after seeing Geoffs (monkeyhangar)in his Gadget-tastic motor. I'll beat those ****** cameras somehow.

Howard,

As mentioned in this thread, you need extra software for Speed Camera location.

I got Trafcam yesterday, its currently in testing mode, will post an opinion when i've had a chance to use it properly.

So, have you played with it yet? I'm on the verge of entering plastic details and wondered what you think of it? Recommend it ?

I Can't speak for the Dell Pda's ( i have an Ipaq :p ) but TomTom is excellent. Its got me from A to B without having to go via X,Y & Z a few times now. Well worth the outlay if you do a few long trips without a co-driver to read maps :)

I wish i was having the same joy. Avoid the Dell/TomTom combo - they are both buggy pieces of ****. Ive spent two days trying to get the software to recognise where i live - no luck yet. The Dell freezes at least once every twenty minutes, and TomTom have absolutely no telephone support. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Hmm. I was hoping for better news. Sorry to hear that Howard. When the dell freezes, is that using Tomtom/gps or even in standalone mode? :(
