VRS Instrument lighting

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

i've just joined and pleased there is such a large & keen community of owners.

i came here because of two problems.

(1) Instrument lamp failures.

i am very disappointed to suffer with this only weeks after buying my first Skoda. The car itself is a wonderful little tiger in plain clothes! It seems to be amazing performance for a 2.0 diesel. Very surprised and delighted with it, until these instrument lamps failed. They are all the lamps that light the needles and there is one of the dial lamps out as well.

I decided to see what was involved in replacing failed lamps and told by a SKODA dealer the lamps are fitted for life and don't come out. Apparently the only solution is a new instrument cluster at a cost of £890 +VAT plus coding at £51 +VAT. So can you imagine the shock.

i contacted SKODA but they declined to help with any contribution at all. I put it to them they must be aware these inbuilt lamps fail and said I was interested to know if the problem is common.

Are there any members here here who have suffered this failure and if so what solution did you find?

(2) Inbuilt SatNav map update

This should have been easy and it was easy right through to finding the right maps for my DNX521DAB unit. But there is where Kenwood left me hanging. After guiding me all that way including purchasing a brand new USB to ensure a clean device system I am informed that map updates are 8GB but not available to download and there's then no suggestion what to do next. I know there are later maps. The maps in my device are 2015.

My question is whether any other users of that model of SatNav have encountered this, and if so, what steps did you take that resolved it.

Thats it for now, but I'm sure I will be back!

More information

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

The needle illumination is a known issue, having just had the same issue. There are several threads on here with reference to the way ahead. A well respected company in Waterlooville, hampshire can repair/replace the led's for about £100. You can either remove the cluster youself and post, or go there and they can remove it at the workshop. Secondly, you could change them out yourself depending on you level of diy. Again, there is a thread on here detailing how to do it.

Hope the info above can get you started.

Cant help with your second issue, however, the rate at which people get back to you on this forum and the level of knowledge they have should get you sorted.

Hi and welcome.

On the second, it's not something I own. USing: https://search.briskoda.net/ I popped in the model code. There are a lot of pages of possible leads, see if those help, although some might be obsolete by age, worth a read over a brew.

The data files should be somewhere for download if you've brought them as a part of the package etc. Maybe try kenwood helper #2. Was listening to an IT support last week while SWMBO was trying to power on her laptop... he was escalating it, after trying the press power button... :wall: All it needed was the little reset pin pressing. I did that, they got back to her 5 hours later to suggest shipping to lenovo.
