VRS engine note... NEEDS IMPROVING

Featured Replies

My Octavia VRS sounds very bland compared with my old 20v 5 cyl Fiat Coupe Turbo, how can I achieve a better engine sound? Right now my Jabba'd engine just sounds like its sucking in air through a straw! A green panel filter did nothing and I don't want to buy a new exhaust as it is the engine note I want improving, any solutions people?

the engine note is a product of the manifold and exhaust.

it will not change if you do not change the exhaust - or remove one coil pack.

Open cone induction kit with cold air feed will give it a real growl. No need to change the exhaust for that. K7N 57i kits are around £100, Gen2 kits are £200ish. There's also pipercross.

Closed systems won't produce the same sort of growl as open so i'd stick with open. Problem with open is heat soak when stationary or moving slow, this can be reduced with shielding but it's not as effective as a closed system.

How about a carbonio CAI ?

Ebay CAI- £40 delivered for Briskoda members. Love mine.

They sound pretty much the same. Difference is, the CAI sucks in nice cold air instead of hot air from the engine bay like an open cone does. I wouldn't be surprised if you actually lost BHP with an open cone.

email Jon at [email protected] and mention Briskoda. He gives us a bit of a discount- £40 inc delivery. Takes around 45mins to fit. I love mine! Has a nice growl and you hear the DV making that noise! Feels a bit quicker too.

Thanks I wil email him! :)

What are you lot on about!!

Air filters are air filters, they do not change your engine note. All they do is make a noise as air is sucked or blown through the filter medium, be it paper or cotton gauze or anything else for that matter.

er have you never seen a car with a cone filter on??? Simple bloody physics should tell you it will alter the engine note, it's called induction noise. Common sense should tell you that sound travels through an open whole covered with sponge a lot better than it does through a big plastic box.

yes you see when you stick ya foot down you're throttle opens, which is a direct tunnel from air box to inlet manifold to cylinders. When covered by a a big palstic box (often with a resonator) the sound is muffled and quite (like having a big back box), when covered with a straight pipe to a cone with a bit of sponge over it the sound isn't muffled, it's loud, deep, and growly.

Go take ya air feed off ya throttle body if you want and rev your car.

We are talking induction kits NOT replacment panel filters.

Delcac is right, the noise only changes because of the airfilter. different filters and the way they are connected to the intake does affect the sound though.

my Jabba induction kit gives a nice deep roar up to 4Krpm where the note changes to a mix of turbo whistle, whoosh and roar... its quite addictive.

£230 all in from Jabba and that includes a very nice looking stainless heat shield which forms a kind of box when the bonnet is down.

I myself is more than happy with the BMC Cda box gives great induction note good power gains and has none of the drawback of open air kits and costs about

the same

The question is How do I change engine note.

You can talk about filters till your blue or green or red in the face, they do not change engine note, sorry. All it is is induction noise, be it cone , panel, box, square, triangle etc it's still induction noise.

If you want to change the engine note you need to look further down the line.

To me that is engine note, it's coming from the engine rather than from the exhaust.

I took the question to mean how could he improve the sound of his engine, without having to get an exhaust which would burble and gurgle. An induction kit, imo, is the cheapest, quickest and simplest answer to this problem. The sounds is only genereated when you stick your foot down, can be controlled pretty much at any rev (barring flat out) and so in my opinion I class that as part of the engine note.

Oh well what do I know anyway. :rotz:

Next you'll be telling me a Tree Air freshener improves BHP..............It doesn't does it.

oooh aren't we the cocky little comedian eh?

If ya can't get ya point across or explain your meaning without resorting to childish sarcastic comments then don't bother.

Better than talking rubbish.

I'll leave you to your engine note....see ya

ROFL:rofl:

I'm with Del tbh. I have an ABD CAI, one of the best air intakes available (K&N??don't make me laugh!- If you want K&N I suggest you stick to Nova's). The induction noise and Re-circ valve is much more noticable but it didn't do anything for the 'engine note'. The engine note will most noticibly be improved by upgrading the exhaust system (manifold/downpipe/centre box/backbox/sport cat) not the intake system. For 'true' engine note improvement you will have to look into some serious engine modifications.

"engine note" or the sound of the actual lump is just vibration anyway...

if you refer "engine note" to the induction sound given by a filter then fine but be clear that you explain what you mean and know what your trying to say before biting people back when they question you.

Delcac - time of the month !? maybe you all need to turn the gas down and simmer a little !

and by the way, since installing the apple frangrance magic tree the cars never ran so well.

De

Magic trees, cant beat them !!

Back to the original question

The 6 pot out of the R32 will fit with a bit of persuasion, that should do the trick,

Cheaper solution is to get a set of those silly max power speakers & a Cd of a Ferrari on full chat through a tunnel

On a more practical note the Exhaust is the only way to do much, Blue Flame will custom build a system with whatever cat/silencer you want, give them a call & discuss your requirements. They make all the Systems for TVR that sound kind of sweet, they have also worked for Bentley which is a different "nice" noise.

Another "BIG" vote for Blueflame.:thumbup:           :rofl:

Regarding all the above engine note business... I would have thought that to change the note of the engine you might be looking at something more substantial like a port grinding or differant cams etc, that might not even change anything... engine mods not air intake or exhaust... Only trouble with this sort of thing is that it doesn't come cheap.
