Damaged Colleagues Car

Featured Replies

Yesterday finishing work I damaged a colleague's car when the wind caught my door and banged in his. This caused a very small dent and a layer of paint off his ford. He is saying he will just go to ford for a quote and no other garage. I think he should get a few quotes. What do you guys think?.

Last year he had a dent on his car after someone banged it in a car park so he had to pay for it but didn't go to ford he went to back Street garage.

Well done for putting your hand up for causing the damage.

One of my workmates hasn't!

I was fair to him, hoping he will be fair to me and go get caught few quotes.

It may not vary that much.

Get a good photo and contact a different repairer of your choice for a quote for the damage to compare and contrast when he comes back to you.  Only worth arguing if there is something to argue about...

If paint wasn't removed you may have been able to get a smart repair to push or pull it out, but if paint has all gone, the door is likely to have to be repainted and maybe some blending depending on colour of his car.

Top layer of paint chipped off :-(.

Can you get a pic?

Taken a few photos but I can't see anything. Will take some in the morning when sun's not on it.

Your colleague being awkward so sadly you have little choice over what they choose to do and are not prepared to use a back street garage this time do you.

I will tell him to get 3 quotes. If it was the other way round I would go for quotes. Would it be a total respray of the door or just round the dent.

If it happened to me I would want it doing at a garage of my choice too, having to run round getting 3 different quotes in my time for something that isn't my fault would irk me. Unless it was then picked up and returned which all adds to the costs of the repair it would be more of my time wasted.

Most likely for the amount damage caused the garage would get a Chipsaway kind of repairer in to do the work so you maybe best asking him to agree to one of these of his choice and cutting out the middle man and hassle.

It's only a slight dent, doesn't go in much.If it's more then £250 might as well get my car insurance company involve.

Downside of that is even if your ncb is protected your next quote may be higher due to the system knowing you have made a claim

a lot of " chips away " " dents are us " franchises visit work places why not ask if you can get a quote ?

He is determined to go to the ford dealer.

Tell him you've made a mistake, It wasn't me,

Having said that , my local dealer has a Chips Away type firm arrive every Wednesday to tart up cars that are for sale, fix alloys/ paint scuffs and small paint jobs, I would think the Ford Garage would have the same.

Just out of interest what colour of Ford, and which model is it?

Fiesta st, black.

A photo when not in direct sunlight, and shooting from above down or along the side of the car may show the dent and marks better.

If it is a fill and spray job, the door will need doing at least, if it was somebody reasonably priced, maybe £250 would cover it.  But not a leather sofa with included cappuccinos and luxury courtesy car type repair centre.  Chips away may try to repair and paint the affected area and blend in. It may not be invisible, but you could get their opinion.

A few photos will help with your quest.

The trouble with smart repair Franchises is that it is all down to the skill and experience of the operator, if you have recommendations and have seen their work it may be an option.  There have been posts before of repairs gone wrong, so I can understand some apprehension if you tried to suggest this.

I'd carefully weigh up claiming, it is not ONLY the economics of the excess ££ vs repair cost ££.

You can see the red paint on the car, hardly a dent.

My Leon was 'doored' right on the swage line.  Local bodyshop said I could not have damaged the worst part of the door if I tried!  It was a dent and paint down to the metal 20x10mm area.  The bodyshop is a very reputable place who have contracts with a lot of local dealers, some quite high end too.  Anyway...the charge for this was £125, which £40 was for the dent alone.   This was in March.

TBH I can't even see any dent on those pics and I can't see how it's going to cost a lot.  Get some better photo's; some smart repairers will quote from uploaded photographs so at least you'll be able to get an idea of the cost and compare to the quote your colleague obtains from the dealer.  As above, you'll probably find that the dealer will have a local repairer booked in for the same morning/a'noon every week and the dealer will charge a 'middle man' premium.   I don't know of a single dealer near us that has a dedicated body repair department, it's all sub contracted.

I actually think a few passes with a machine polisher will remove that paint transfer and whatever is left will be sorted with a well placed push or at worse a slide hammer and a few taps.  Hardly going to be anywhere near an insurance excess.

Your colleague sounds like he's a being a bit of a twunt.  In honesty I'd be pretty miffed myself but I'd also be very appreciative that you fessed up and offered to sort the repair.   Hope you reach an amicable solution.

Has soon it happened I told him and said I will pay for it. Try to find it this morning and could hardly find it. Told him to go for quotes but he is set on going to ford.

A few of the lads have seen it and can't understand the fuss.

Since he was presumably happy with the previous repair, suggest he gets a quote from the same place?

If it's a sensible amount, stick the cash in his hand.
