Rev counter

Featured Replies

Hi all! picked up our new vrs estate petrol dsg yesterday, petrol? Wow! Love it! But is this normal? Driving up the A1 I noticed when you come of the throttle, the rev counter needle drops down to tick over?something a miss?  Never experienced any thing like this since my mk11 escort days....

It's in Eco mode, just need to press the mode/VRS button and cycle through the modes

It would depend on the circumstances. Im nit aware that Eco mode cuts revs instantly you come off the accelerator, and if you're in gear (say 6th) and doing motorway speeds, it's not possible for your tachometer (revs dial) to drop instantly. It will dip, but depends on how long in between changes you're off the gas.

There's definitely a quick drop compared to my previous cars now I come to think about it.....I remember when I first got it I seemed to have to either slip the clutch a bit, or completely come off the gas, clutch in, change, bring the clutch back up completely and then and only then, get back on the gas.

And don't get me started on the clutch valve 'hump' they designed......

Actually, the more I think about it the more I realise that you're right and I've just adapted my driving.

Also, I came from 6 years of diesels so I had a curve to get back into.

Ha ha yes it's in eco mode! Thanks chaps! I cannot believe how more refined a petrol vrs is to my mk2 superb diesel. I'm well chuffed

Are we talking about manuals here? Mine doesn't do this even in eco mode

Mines an auto, can say for manual ones !

Ah, didn't read the dsg bit. Mines manual but doesn't drop off to tick over.

I'd be very worried if my manual did that.

So I tested the Eco mode and lo and behold the revs do drop! Doesn't do it in individual mode with engine set to Eco, despite the gear indicators showing E.

Might try full blown eco mode with coasting on the commute tomorrow to see if it makes a difference.

I dont really understand why "ECO" mode uses coasting unless the speed is very low.

If you are decelerating with a gear engaged, you are using no fuel at all..

If you are coasting you are using the fuel to idle the engine but gain a slight improvement as you dont have engine braking.

But most auto cars seem to do this.

BMW have a nice system for this so when you are off the Accelerator pedal, they use the VVT to open the inlet & exahust to allow air to flow freely through the engine elliminating most of the engine braking & it also works on the manual gearbox.
